We're an interconnected nationwide team, but we each have our own reasons for being passionate about the work we do! This month, learn about Angelo Rao and his passion for transportation safety. 🌱 Angelo advocates for public safety to anyone who will listen and has recently become fascinated with the relationship between Disruptive Innovation and complete streets, safe systems approach, and Vision Zero. ✅ After four decades in the industry, the biggest lesson he's learned is to listen. To solve complex problems, you should listen to what the communities and industry professionals have to say. It's important to be an "absorber of ideas" rather than an "expert." Experts have a tendency to say no too often. 👂 Read more about Angelo's story. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gdKmcHud

We solve complex transportation problems to improve people's everyday lives.
About us
We solve complex transportation problems to improve people's everyday lives. Whether we’re recommending improvements to a single intersection or helping communities plan for autonomous vehicles, we love tackling transportation challenges through planning, operations, design and research. With people from 19 different countries working in more than 20 offices around the U.S., we still consider ourselves “one office in many locations.” It all started more than 30 years ago, when founding principal Wayne Kittelson realized his dream to create an environment where transportation experts could collaborate through meaningful work, empower their communities and grow as individuals. While we’ve expanded since then, our unwavering values have always guided our approach. Kittelson's strength draws from our connectedness as a firm. Our offices work together seamlessly and collaboratively, allowing staff to share perspectives and discover new and innovative solutions for the clients and communities we serve. We invite you to learn more about the people who are the lifeblood of this vibrant firm, as well as the challenges they are tackling in the world of transportation by connecting with us via LinkedIn or through the other social media outlets we use. We also encourage you to explore our extensive website to understand the values we hold true. We look forward to collaborating with you!

The Gulf Coast Safe Streets Summit is an event dedicated to enhancing efforts in creating safe, equitable, and connected transportation networks. As cities grow and evolve, we must prioritize designs that protect vulnerable road users, embrace emerging technologies, and foster community engagement. 🌱 We’re inspired by the care that Plan Hillsborough (Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission) put into this year’s Gulf Coast Safe Streets Summit and honored to have collaborated with them on conference coordination. This summit will run alongside the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Coalition Meeting led by Florida Department of Transportation, amplifying even more excitement about safe streets. ✅ We’d love to connect with you while we’re there! Kelly Fearon, Nathan Kautz, P.E., Megan Mello (Morrow), AICP, Mary Taylor Raulerson, Leyi Zhang, Jennifer Musselman, PE, Angela Kristiansen, Jasmine B., and Angelo Rao will be participating. We’re sure you’ll leave feeling inspired by the incredible work being done to promote safer streets. 🤝 https://lnkd.in/gqXpQqHN #SafeStreets #transportationplanning #transportationengineering #pedestrian #activetransportation #PedestrianSafetyMonth

New guidance is paving the way for better bicyclist experiences at roundabouts, which is exciting to see — so, what does this guidance look like in practice? 💡 A built example of a separated bike lane around a roundabout (or in this case, a traffic circle, due to a stop sign installed for safety reasons) is Powder House Square in Somerville, Massachusetts. Before its conversion, Powder House Square was a convoluted convergence of six two-way streets, with no defined path of travel for bicyclists. 😵 Today, the traffic circle has a well-defined single traffic lane and a separated bike lane runs around the perimeter. Check out this video to see how it works! ✅ #TransportationPlanning #roundabouts #TrafficCircle

Transitioning from school to a career is a big change! Here are a few tips from Michael Alston, TE, Ly Nguyen and Krista Purser, PE for making that transition a little easier. 🎓 ➡️ 💼 ✅ When you submit an assignment in school, you don’t have to think about it anymore, but in consulting, submitting something is just the beginning. Remember to have patience and focus on quality work over trying to get projects done quickly. 💬 There are many different people you work with in the lifetime of your career—clients, coworkers, peers, bosses. Learn how to communicate effectively with different types of people. 💡 Don’t feel rushed to figure everything out in the first year of your career, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your career is a continuous learning process. Check out our “Career Conversation” video series for more candid insights from our team: https://lnkd.in/gJVYPGjP

Woonerfs, or living streets, are designed to allow people who drive, bike, and walk to share the same space. Cars must drive slowly, ultimately allowing pedestrian and cyclists to rule the road. What do you think of this concept? 💭
Today, Mike Alston at Kittelson & Associates, Inc. introduced us to woonerfs! They are internal driveways that also function as shared recreation/social spaces. Pedestrians and bicycles have priority, and motor vehicles are must slow down so that people feel welcome and safe.
