We are excited to be part of the Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) to showcase our innovative medical and biomedical software. We will also be sharing the details of our involvement in two Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) programs, In The Moment (ITM) and Triage. Both of these programs leveraged the Pulse Physiology Engine to augment real world data with synthetic physiology data for medical machine learning tasks, making resource and time-limited medical triage decisions and predicting the need for life-saving interventions. In addition to exhibiting (find us at booth 313!), we also had the following papers accepted: 🧠 An artificial intelligence solution to human-trusted medical triage decision-making Our paper discusses the development of a synthetic dataset using the Pulse Physiology Engine to simulate casualties with varying injuries and track vital signs. This dataset, consisting of 4,000 cases, was used to evaluate an LLM’s ability to apply the START triage protocol, achieving 63% accuracy in tagging predictions. The dataset will be publicly available and can support future research on medical triage AI systems. ⏱ Predicting the need for life-saving interventions during triage using a deep time-series predictor pipeline This paper explores a system combining deep learning and symbolic prediction to identify the need for life-saving interventions in mass casualty scenarios before patient decompensation occurs. Using synthetic data from the Pulse Physiology Engine and clinical datasets like MIMIC-III/IV, the pipeline predicted hemorrhage-induced cardiovascular collapse with 76% accuracy. Future work includes expanding to other injuries and integrating symbolic predictions to enhance decision-making. 🔎 Personalized evaluation of the lumbar spine for susceptibility to pain and injury in warfighters The paper investigates using advanced shape analysis methods on positional MRI (pMRI) scans to identify biomarkers for load-induced lower back pain (LBP) in soldiers, aiming to improve injury prevention and treatment. The study's geodesic logistic regression model effectively distinguishes between pain and no-pain states based on intervertebral disc (IVD) shape, laying the groundwork for a computer-assisted tool to predict LBP risk and enhance soldier deployability. Early Intervention Saves Lives! In large casualty incidents and mass casualty scenarios, prioritizing life-saving interventions (LSIs) for the most critically injured is a major challenge. Identifying the need for crucial treatments like blood products and airway intervention before rapid destabilization is key to improving outcomes. At #MHSRS 2024, we will present our work on a deep time-series predictor pipeline designed to forecast the need for LSIs in these high-pressure situations. Combining deep learning with a symbolic predictor, our system—ALICE (AI Life-saving Intervention Compute Engine)—analyzes physiologic data signals to autonomously predict the need for LSIs. We’re excited to share our promising results and explore how this approach can enhance real-world care for the injured. Are you attending the Military Health System Research Symposium (#MHSRS) in Florida next week? If so, we invite you to join us for our presentation, “An Artificial Intelligence Solution to Human-Trusted Medical Triage Decision Making.” Kitware Inc. will showcase an innovative approach to enhancing medical triage decisions using AI methodologies developed as part of DARPA’s In the Moment (ITM) program. The AI solution leverages large language models (#LLM) to flexibly weigh different attributes, evaluate all possible options, and generate natural language explanations for its decisions. To assess the solution's effectiveness in triage decision-making, our team created a large synthetic dataset using our open-source Pulse Physiology Engine, which calculates vital signs across various states, including health, disease, injury, and treatment. The work has resulted in a large open dataset of approximately 4,000 descriptions, and we're looking forward to releasing it to support further advancements in the field.
