There are many cases of people who die from a heart attack during a bad weather event. The weather event is then credited for the cause of that death. In reality, there are many other factors that led to that situation, and we incorrectly give too much causal weight to the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. This misaligned credit assignment happens frequently in cybersecurity. Often, it's not a single flaw that causes a breach but a culmination of small oversights, neglected practices, and ignored warning signs. One can compare a modern breach (in a company with a decently well prepared/funded security team) with things like the Challenger explosion. The real problem stems from larger management issues. Like the Challenger explosion, you can't place the blame on a single individual or the manufacturer of a specific product. Rather, the blame more often lies with management's lax attitude towards safety and security. We are repeating this problem again with AI. In the interests of launching on schedule, many will ignore the concerns by the engineers and press forward in the hopes that nothing will blow up. Let's not blame the engineers when that happens.

What do you know about Identity Management? Over the last 2 months, I had the good fortune of sitting in on 2 discussions about identity management. This one was set up for individuals at Nightwing and RTX. One of them was presented by Allen Male and Sounil Yu at Knostic. Identity management is a critical component of Cybersecurity and Individual management. Many organizations struggle with this concept and the correct applications of it. Allen and Sounil were able to identify some key challenges and strategies to mitigate these concerns. Thank you Julian Zottl for setting this up. Presentations like this one truly help one understand the ramifications of turning a blind eye or having an "Out of sight, out of mind" approach. A safe and secure future for us and the generations to follow start with us doing our part and truly implementing a zero-trust approach to Cybersecurity. Great presentation team.

LinkedIn’s social algorithms are awful at determining true experts. So what makes one truly an expert? One perspective is the depth of knowledge in a given domain, but the other is one’s ability to organize that knowledge to facilitate the understanding and discovery of new depths. To rapidly gain expertise, having a structure for understanding is more important than the ability to absorb expert level content.
