Venture Capitalist and Advisor to Execs of the ENR 500 and the firms that aspire to be. Investing capital and time into entrepreneurs and leaders driving change in the built environment through new business creation.

This week is a big one. My 8th annual summit and 1 day mastermind meet up, here in Atlanta. About 150 startup founders, #architects #engineers and #construction industry disruptors. These folks are building and not talking about it.

I really enjoy the conversations that I have with #aec executives. Today I was having a conversation with the CEO of an Engineering firm. I was giving my views of Private Equity and how for many firms that sell to PE may be doing so for a liquid event and that they don’t see their firm growing. Essentially, they are selling their interest in their firm and then likely allocating to the public markets. It could mean that on a risk adjusted basis they have more confidence in the stock market than their own company. However, there can be a hybrid approach. If you look at what physicians have done. Their obstacle to growing their practices is being able to recruit more Doctors. So what they have done is split their business into Primary Care and Urgent Care. Primary care is smaller and more bespoke to deal with a myriad of patients. This is run with a high Dr-PA-Nurse ratio. The Urgent Care business is like a retail operation that deals with the colds and sniffles crowd. Rarely a Dr to be found and run by PA and Nurses. It is a highly operational model that scales well. By bifurcating the businesses, the medical industry has created a product that PE loves and they have kept the business that they have no interest in owning. Instead of selling all of your AE firm to PE, maybe carve out the operational, high repetition work to PE and keep the other stuff. Use that capital to fund innovation in the business and then rinse and repeat. Your core business is to incubate and spin out the commodity business to PE. I have also seen this with Medical Transport, Vets and Dental Spas.

So many conversations about “investing in our people” in the AEC space. Developing people in a professional services business “is the business”. However , are you trying to create clones that “fit” your company or people that are the future of transforming your company. “Wash, rinse, repeat” of Human Resources. 1. Do you have a process to identify high potential talent? 2. Do you have a system to propel them? 3. Are you afraid of losing your best to the competition? For transparency, we charge $99/mo for this program. The next cohort starts November 5th. If you are leadership at an AEC firm, pick your favorites and send them this link. (Yes, you have faves), whether they signup or not, the gesture will be meaningful. https://lnkd.in/esHWtmuB

As you plan your 2025 Event schedule, consider a few things. As an attendee: 1. Avoid pay to play. If the speakers are sponsors, skip it. 2. Why? To Network, To Learn, to Buy, to Sell, for Fun, convenience to foster existkng relationships … be intentional. Some events are great for networking, a few are good for learning. 3. Is it the peer group you are already in OR the peer group you want to have? 4. How would you define success by attending the event? 5. How does attending this event inform your career 5 years from now? As a Sponsor: 1. If your goal brand awareness, swap your attenence budget (tickets, flights, hotel and your time) for a premium sponsorship. Everyone will leave the event knowing your brand. Your other choice is to walk around in a gorilla outfit with your company t-shirt on. 2. If your goal is meetings. Do a great pre-event campaign. Rent a space at the venue and schedule a ton of meetings/demos. 3. SWAG- don’t give it away at the booth. Do premium stuff and ship it 30 days after the event. No one wants to carry it around and you get another brand hit, 30 days later. 4. Invite only dinners. Don’t even attend the actual event. Send a note to prospects.. “Are you coming to?” Let’s grab dinner. I made a reservation for 8 at XYZ fancy restaurant. 5. Talk to conference organizers. Tell them exactly what you are looking for and ask them if they can help. Please post events that you are considering and why? Will give you my transparent view. This morning at breakfast I told a sponsor prospect NOT to sponsor my Summit. Why? He was Atlanta local, my attendees are global, he wanted AEC firms under 100 people, my firms are much larger…
