Creating a more human society where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together.
About us
L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. is creating a more human society where people with and without intellectual disabilities share life together. We celebrate the unique value of every person, recognizing and accepting our need of one another and building relationships that transform all of us. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, L’Arche GWDC provides housing and support services to adults with intellectual disabilities, and serves hundreds of people in the wider community, of many different backgrounds, by offering a place of belonging and growth. Our community life centers on relationships, led by “core members,” the adults with intellectual disabilities who live in L’Arche homes. People come from all over the country and the world to visit L’Arche and learn from core members, our mission, and our model. In our four homes, two in DC and two in Arlington, we eat, play, learn, laugh, grieve, and pray together. We do with and not for – growing and supporting one another in a mutually transformative way. We are an inter-denominational Christian community that welcomes people of all faiths or none. L’Arche Greater Washington, D.C. is part of the international federation of L’Arche communities, committed to making known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities all over the world.

Fact: Almost 15,000 people with disabilities are on waiting lists for housing across Virginia. The need is staggering. For years it’s been on our hearts to respond. Very soon, we will see even more joy, life, and belonging when the Reevesland Farmhouse becomes a new L’Arche home! As the project moves forward, we’re more and more thankful for this property and the legacy of the Reeves family. They too valued home, family, and belonging. Here’s Cheryl Scannell, daughter of Nelson and Louise Reeves, who lived and farmed here for almost 100 years. She shares more about her family’s story and her excitement for bringing Reevesland to life once again. Your partnership will grow spaces of belonging as we renovate the Reeves Farmhouse into a new L’Arche home and seed a compensation fund that will grow year after year to provide equitable pay and benefits for our assistants. It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! We are THRILLED to share the big news… We are adding a new L’Arche home to welcome new core members and assistants! Creating more spaces of belonging has been on our heart for years. And now everything’s coming together! 1) We found a wonderful location: the historic Reeves Farmhouse in Arlington, VA. 2) We have amazing construction partners: Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. & Northern Virginia and HomeAid National Capital Region. And we are equally excited that HomeAid has recruited Toll Brothers as Builder Captain. They are graciously contributing labor and materials, which greatly offsets project costs. 3) The third and final piece of the project comes from faithful friends like you! Your support creates more spaces of belonging by raising $2M for What’s Next, our 40th anniversary capital campaign that covers the farmhouse renovations and seeds an assistant compensation and benefits fund. What’s Next is only possible if you are part of it. We’ll share more details in the weeks ahead. Until then, we’d love to hear from you! Share what you are most excited about for What’s Next with L’Arche GWDC ⬇️ 🎉! Visit our online hub to learn more: larche-gwdc.org/whatsnext
