Did you know that the LA Conservation Corps recycles discarded tires? Our recently released Return on Investment Report shows that our Corpsmembers collected and recycled 16,902 tires last fiscal year! That means we’re reusing natural resources, preventing fires from stockpiled tires, decreasing landfill disposal costs, and stopping them from becoming mosquito breeding grounds. Our CEO, Wendy Butts, joined the Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Brenda Mallory, for a site visit at Bethune Middle School, where we are working with LA Sanitation & Environment to plant trees. Our work at Bethune Middle School is part of a larger project to plant 580 trees using funding provided by the Inflation Reduction Act through the U.S. Forest Service and granted to the City of LA. We discussed with the Chair the importance of the Corps and our mission to create green career pathways for young adults and promote climate resiliency. Did you know that the LA Conservation Corps has After School Program locations across the city of Los Angeles? Last fiscal year, 4,614 students participated in LA Conservation Corps After School programs. Today, we want to shine a light on Advancing Equity: Lights On Afterschool illuminates the vital role of expanded learning programs in leveling the playing field. Traditionally, these programs have served economically disadvantaged students and provided crucial additional learning time. By significantly extending the school calendar, we ensure that students who are traditionally left behind can catch up and receive the same enrichment opportunities as their peers, bridging a critical gap in access and resources.

Last week’s AmeriCorps YouthBuild Service Learning Exchange at Compton Creek Natural Park was a huge success! Our #YouthBuild participants worked alongside AmeriCorps members from YouthBuild Rockford, YouthBuild Lake County, YouthBuild Burlington, and YouthBuild South LA to clean and maintain this important park for the community, making it a wonderful place for Compton residents to relax, recreate, and enjoy. #Service #Compton #Parks

A group of our Corpsmembers from across Los Angeles County is participating in forklift training at our Northeast LA site. This training ends with an industry-recognized certification that opens doors to a variety of career pathways for our Corpsmembers. This week, we hosted a YouthBuild AmeriCorps Service Learning Exchange at Compton Creek Natural Park. Our YouthBuild AmeriCorps members joined Corpsmembers and staff from YouthBuild Rockford, YouthBuild Lake County, YouthBuild Burlington, and YouthBuild South LA for team building and a meaningful day of service, maintaining the park and the community garden. It was amazing to see our #YouthBuild AmeriCorps members connect and serve alongside fellow AmeriCorps members from across the country, building bonds and connections through service. #ServiceLearning #Compton #GreenJobs
