So I’m turning forty this week, like many of my older Millennial brethren. How we are forty and still standing is beyond me. What a time. If anyone were to ask me what the most important parts of my life and career have been, the answer has always been, and will continue to forever be, people. People are what matter. Relationships are what matter. Treating people well is what matters. Showing empathy and kindness and compassion is what matters. Using your goodness and relationships and connections to uplift others is what matters. Fighting for representation and equity and justice is what matters. Trying to find your little tribes in each of your new roles and companies, and taking these friends with you for the rest of your life, is what matters. To be clear, I’ve certainly come across (and worked for and with) my share of not so nice people over the past two decades, but they have been few and far between, and they have their own miserable selves to reckon with. :) I’m grateful that the weird constructs of capitalism have allowed me to be able to helpful to others, but I will say that it does take a village… …and huge thanks to a wonderful member of my village, Eric Skae, for the beautiful surprise delivery of many cases of Carbone Fine Food sauce right to my front door this week. As a 40th birthday gift, I baked and delivered 40 lasagnas to folks in need of a hot meal in Baltimore. Oh, and - Don’t @ me for the socks with BIRKENSTOCKs. I’m forty now. I can do shit like this.

I recently received a thoughtful gift in the mail from Lasagna Love , celebrating my volunteer anniversary as a local leader of central Indiana. I don't volunteer to receive anything in return, but because it's deeply fulfilling in a low-stress way. It's been an incredible journey to help others in the community. I only spend a few hours per week matching volunteers to requests and making Lasagna's, but I truly enjoy every minute and look forward to many more years of service.
