Since she started in her role as a School-Based Therapist, Andrea made a concerted effort to collaborate with the school staff, both on her QuEST team and across the building as a whole. She went out of her way to become familiar with the teachers, counselors, and administrators, and make herself available to help them with anything that they needed. This did not go unnoticed as, within her first month on the job, the building principal gave a very high commendation of Andrea to her supervisor. And, in the subsequent time since then, she has received similar compliments on numerous occasions from staff across the building. This is likely due to Andrea’s commitment to becoming an invaluable member of the school’s culture. This is most obviously reflected through her willingness to step up and help with the challenges presented by the behavioral needs of the students, such as assisting with morning check-ins and distribution of behavior charts as students arrive or using her space in the building for students to take a break or continue their learning during a room clear. However, Andrea has also shown her collaborative effort through more entertaining activities such as being a member of the school’s version of The Rockettes for their holiday parade. While reluctant to participate at first, Andrea knew that joining with the teachers would help solidify the bonds she had with them and the school, as well as make for a fun and memorable moment for the students. In addition, Andrea has found effective ways to collaborate with her Laurel Life colleagues as well. For instance, to help a new Laurel Life staff member in her building get acclimated, Andrea connected with her to help her learn the building schedule and routines, particularly in the mornings when the building is busiest. Further, as the end of the school year approached, Andrea made sure to get the schedule for field trips and activities to the new staff member, for her to be aware and not have it disrupt her work. Similarly, Andrea has collaborated with the Laurel Life staff in the middle school to help her students who are transitioning from her program there. To do this, she has coordinated Zoom meetings for the students to meet the new therapist, as well as meetings later in the year to check in and monitor progress. This has been greatly appreciated by the staff, as it allows them to help ease the adjustment, and by the students as they enjoy being able to hear from their elementary therapist from time to time. In Laurel Life’s school-based services, our treatment teams often are made up of many parts, including teachers, other district staff, students, families, and the therapeutic staff. In her program, Abbey Gingrich is the glue that holds all the parts together. She is the person that the others look to for support and decision making. And this is all because Abbey is conduit through which the program’s collaboration flows. Abbey works with students with many different mental health, medical, and educational needs. To address these, Abbey is frequently the liaison between the school and students’ outside providers, which can include outpatient therapists, family-based therapists, case workers, PCPs, and many more. For instance, her program is run by a psychiatrist with whom Abbey communicates with frequently. This involves knowing when to reach out and how information is most effectively communicated to the psychiatrist, for the benefit of the students. Further, Abbey coordinates two days per month when her students and their caregivers meet with the psychiatrist, to communicate their needs and discuss any concerns. Along with the students, Abbey communicates frequently with the caregivers with whom she works, to aid when the students are struggling. She is often the person who parents will reach out to when they are concerned about their child to ensure that the student gets the support they need at school. Through her calm and welcoming demeanor, Abbey easily builds strong, trusting relationships with the caretakers and families. From there, Abbey is able to collaborate with them regarding how needs can be met at school and home for the students. Simultaneously, Abbey collaborates with the general education teachers to help them support the students in the program. She serves as a guide for them to voice their concerns, brainstorm solutions, and collaborate on how to address the students. This allows Abbey to be a bridge for the general education staff to coordinate with the therapeutic emotional support staff effectively. Beyond the school staff with whom she works, Abbey is also the Laurel Life team leader for her school district, and she creates an environment where the other staff are comfortable reaching out to her for support. She has created gift baskets for staff members who have had challenges either personally or been experiencing challenging days at work. She makes sure to effectively coordinate with her supervisor regarding vital information for her to disseminate to her team, and is an active participant in planning for her team and the entirety of ISS. Thus, Abbey’s commitment to the value of collaboration is clear in all that she does, and she is overwhelmingly qualified for the Living Our Values Award for Collaboration. Thank you for living our values! #LivingOurValues #thankyouforallyoudo
