Advancing Education in our Community since 1992
About us
LAWA is Charlotte’s first organization established to serve the Latino student. Originally founded over 25 years ago as the Latin American Women’s Association, the organization changed its name to Latin Americans Working for Achievement in 2017 to accurately reflect its diverse internal and external populations. Education equity and access, workforce and talent development, and college and career readiness are the major focus areas of LAWA programs. High School Series is a program targeting high school students to promote their enrollment at post-secondary education programs including technical training and four-year studies. Over 1,000 youth have participated in the program since 2010. The Scholarships program targets undergraduate students. Scholarships are granted based on merit, community involvement, financial need, and interest in continuous growth and improvement. Over 240 youth have been awarded a LAWA scholarship since 1992. Both programs provide Latino youth with the tools and resources needed to become self-sufficient, contributing members of our community.

On Wednesday, we launched the College Hacks Workshops with our first Mental Health Support session, facilitated by our partners at Mental Health America of Central Carolinas, Kevin Markle and Tatiana Leon. During this interactive session, both students and staff engaged in learning effective strategies for managing defensive behavior to prevent physical confrontations with individuals who may have lost control in various environments, such as school or work. Our scholars shared valuable experiences, illustrating situations they have encountered and discussing their preferred methods for self-care. Self-care is essential, and it is important for us to prioritize it daily. How do you take care of yourself? We invite you to share your self-care tips in the comments; we would love to hear your insights! 💕✨ About College Hacks: The College Hacks program is designed to provide first-generation college students (LAWA Scholarship recipients) with essential social, academic, and mental health support. If your company/organization would like to support our College Hacks Program (Mental Health, Financial Advice, Resume Building, Mock-Interviews,etc.) Please contact our CEO Daniela Izurieta at dizurieta@lawanc.org #lawacollegehacks #mentalhealthawarness #lawanc
