  • Matthew Richter, just wrote this new article about five superstitions many have when it comes to leadership development. A superstition, to borrow from Clark Quinn, is a belief that is followed without question or scrutiny, usually based on anecdotal evidence, tradition, or assumptions, even if it’s not backed by solid research or evidence. Superstitions are often not openly acknowledged as true. In fact, with many superstitions, if quizzed or challenged, folks would deny them, but in practice, still employ them. So, different from myths- a superstition is denied or unsupported by science AND espoused by users as not true, but nonetheless, still used anyway. The five superstitions in the article are: 1️⃣ Leadership Development Works Best in Isolation 2️⃣ Leadership Skills Can Be Mastered Through a One-Time Program— One and Done! 3️⃣ Leadership Development Is Best Delivered Through Lectures, Discussions, and Other Classroom Activities 4️⃣ Leadership 360° Assessments Are a Great Way to Assess Leadership and Leader Behaviors 5️⃣ Leadership Style… oh my! • LDA Co-Director, Clark Quinn is a thinking person. And right now, he is thinking about ADDIE, the instructional systems design model. A critic of it in the past, Clark has been re-thinking his perspective... and perhaps even changing his mind. Or, perhaps he is just delving into the nuance and complexity of the design process. • What the heck is AI?! 🎥 In this special discussion, Lori Niles-Hofmann and Stella Lee, PhD. school Matthew Richter on the basic ins and outs of AI. They talk about what AI is and the different types of AI. They dive into the ethical issues that using AI impact both short-, and long-term. They delve into how information gets curated on different AI platforms. They explore the implications in general, as well as for L&D, when using AI. Specifically they look at the practical implications. Can we use AI to help us solve some of those wicked problems we face? Lori and Stella share advice on how to engage with vendors pushing their AI offerings. Or, at least some questions one might ask when others are authorized to buy, but you have to use it. Speaking of practical… and speaking of ethics… when is it ok to use AI when constructing designs, writing, or researching? What are hallucinations? When does the AI misunderstand us? How do we misunderstand what we get from it? While many are way more educated and knowledgeable about AI than Matt, many others are still confused about what it all means and what it does— but are frankly, slightly… mildly… embarrassed to ask. Matt admits, he had no clue what generative AI referred to instead of “regular” AI. But he does now, as a result of Stella and Lori's educational explanations. The Casual Primer about AI for L&D Practitioners provides the highlights of AI basics as it pertains to L&D. The recording is freely available on the LDA Community. • 📣If you like all things #motivation, check out our podcast YOU OUGHTA KNOW: THE MOTIVATION SERIES, produced in partnership with the Center for Self-Determination Theory (CSDT), and hosted by our own Matthew Richter!

I had a wonderful time chatting with Maarten Vansteenkiste, Professor in development and motivation psychology at Ghent University for the YOU OUGHTA KNOW: THE MOTIVATION SERIES, our podcast produced in partnership with the Center for Self-Determination Theory (CSDT). The podcast is a monthly discussion with a self-determination theory (SDT) researcher and/or practitioner. In this interview we focus on needs crafting and agency. Maarten shares what is meant by these ideas (the act of affecting one’s own environment directly… to steer one’s own life’s circumstances). He also distinguished between being autonomous in contrast with being independent. We also discussed a cool tool, called the CIRCUMPLEX, or COMPASS, a unique way to conceptualize how the basic psychological needs get supported or undermined. We take a late detour to talk about how SDT can actually support techniques like explicit/ direct instruction. And of course, we talk about so much more. I really enjoyed my time with Maarten. He so easily takes complex ideas and makes them immediately relatable and practical. The podcast is available as either a video or just an audio. The audio is readily available on any podcast platform you like to use. The video is available on Apple Podcasts and Podbeam. But, of course you can directly access it now on the LDA or CSDT websites. https://lnkd.in/eiAUnHcZ #motivation #selfdeterminationtheory #SDT

  • Matthew Richter posted the following article on how to choose a learning activity from the billions out there to ensure it aligns to what you need to accomplish. The article assumes you have reached a point in the general instructional design process where you are now choosing activities to achieve a specific learning objective(s). In it, he suggests: 1️⃣ Starting with a high level procedural goal: are you teaching something, assessing something, exploring/solving something, or practicing something? 2️⃣ Now how is the content you are instructing presented (or how do you want to present it)? Is it a lecture? Shared as text? A video? Perhaps it is via a SME answering questions? Or, the learners themselves sharing their collective experience? 3️⃣ Next you have to align the activity to the experience level of the learner. Novices require different activities (or activity adaptations and mods) than expert learners. And moderately experienced learners are different than both of those. 4️⃣ Finally, you need to match the activity to the logistics forced upon you... we mean that are realistically present. Ultimately, we just want designers to be more intentional and thoughtful aligning content + activity + objective. Hope you find the piece interesting and useful. #instructionaldesign #thiagi The Thiagi Group Sivasailam Thiagarajan Clark Quinn Will Thalheimer Stella Lee, PhD.
