About us

The Leader Transition Institute prepares and walks beside people who are making pivots in their lives. Concurrently, we help small and large organizations maximize their abilities to communicate and lead, as well as improve their hiring process. We are a veteran-led 501(c)(3) organization supporting Federal and State Government customers in both CONUS and OCONUS locations. We provide training and coaching to help people - anyone, anywhere - who want to bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be. For service members, veterans, and military spouses, Changing Focus: Moving From We to Me - 24 hours of hands on, interactive training over four days - fills the gap left by the Department of Defense mandated Transition Assistance Program that focuses only on future employment and post-service benefits. Our corporate training division provides leadership, communications, and diversity and inclusion training to both small and large organizations. In nearly three years, we've helped 150 people in 23 states, four countries and three continents learn about who they are as a person - aside from their rank or position and what they've already done in their life, they've become better communicators, and created a vision for themselves of the purposeful life they want for their future. We've also helped them improve their resumes so they've gotten job interviews, and increased their salaries by tens of thousands of dollars. We're proud that our participants tell us that in addition to everything else they learn from us, one of the important things they learn is that they're not alone. They tell us they're grateful to become part of a tribe that gets them. We're a young organization, but focused and excited for the future.

  • Being let down is a pretty crappy thing. From feeling sad and losing trust, to needing to forgive and move on, the domino effect is a drag. One of the biggest threats of being let down is resentment - especially if the disappointment comes from someone close to you. Disappointments are going to happen, even from people you love. Being able to avoid resentment is important for maintaining relationships and moving forward after being let down. Let’s take a look at what can be done to avoid resentment when someone lets you down. There are some universal truths that help people avoid feeling resentment: Truth #1. Most people operate in good faith. Chances are the person who disappointed you did not intend to. Being able to consider this truth can help ease the sting of disappointment. Truth #2. Many disappointments come from miscommunication or crisscrossed expectations. You can avoid resentment from being disappointed by changing communication styles or clarifying needs in the future. Truth #3. People who cause disappointment often feel sorry and want to make amends. Allowing others to make things right can prevent resentment. Working with these truths in mind, take these actions when you start to feel resentment after being disappointed:   Take a deep breath. If you’re disappointed, stop for a moment and asses what happened. Get past the feelings that well up from being let down and ask yourself if there was intent. If not, take a moment to move past the initial feelings and look at how to undo the disappointment or have a conversation with the other person to seek resolution. Improve communication. If your disappointment is due to miscommunication, remedy the situation by making improvements. There are many ways to better communicate and ensure things don’t slip through the cracks or start patterns that cause resentment. Offer forgiveness. If you want to avoid resentment, offer some grace and forgiveness. If the offending party is sorry, it’s pretty easy to forgive and move on. You’ll feel better if you set up new guidelines or take protective measures to make sure things don’t go haywire again.  Resentment is a natural byproduct of disappointment. It can really add to the sting of being let down. You can avoid this natural reaction through intentional thought processes and taking action quickly before resentment sets in. #thegrowthzone #leadertransitioninstitute #lti #zigszagsandpivots

  • Disappointment is a universal issue everyone faces from time to time. It's also very personal. Just because it happens to everyone may not make it feel any better when you are steeping in the emotions that come with disappointment. Feelings like: - Sadness - Anger - Confusion - Bitterness Disappointment can cause messes that have to be cleaned up despite feeling super emotional. Managing the emotions that come with disappointment can keep the issue from taking on a life of its own. So, how do you manage your emotions when you are feeling anything but optimistic? Here's how: Take a day - or two. Take a day or two to feel all the feels. Feel everything that comes up, thanks to that disappointment. Feel the anger, the sadness, the betrayal, self-criticism, or other negative emotions you are feeling. You deserve to acknowledge how you feel and let the emotions rage - for a day. Don't let the emotions take over. They can actually overshadow the disappointment and make things bigger or worse than they have to be. Give yourself 24 hours, then move into problem-solving or healing mode. Practice self-care. Whether it's on the day of your personal pity party or after you've decided to move on and move up, practice self-care. Get enough sleep, eat right, and exercise. Get a mani and a pedi or a massage, whatever gets you feeling better while you manage your emotions. Talk about it. Find someone to help you talk through your disappointment. Someone trustworthy with a level head who will listen and not add to the problem or encourage you to do regrettable things. Having someone to talk to can help you manage the emotions you’re feeling. Get some perspective. Sometimes, your emotions are out of whack in comparison to the situation. Getting some perspective can help keep things from being out of control or dramatic. If you tend to exaggerate or allow emotions to grow more significant than they need to be, get some perspective. Not every disappointment is the end of the world or requires an extreme reaction. Emotional reactions to disappointment are normal. But you don't have to let your emotions take on a life of their own.   • You’ve been through it, we're sure. Things go wrong in life. That's just the way it is. The bad news? It's usually unexpected, unwanted, and inconvenient. The good news? It happens to everyone. It is a universal reality that everyone can relate to. So, yes, things go wrong - but that can be ok. Things going wrong can cause very good things to happen - if you allow for the possibility. How you manage disappointment says a lot about your maturity and your ability to adapt. Additionally, learning to manage the feelings that come with disappointment makes it easier to manage more disappointment, which is inevitable. Feeling disappointed is always hard, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Disappointment can be a gateway to change. Sometimes, experiencing disappointment leads to big decisions that actually improve a situation. Decisions to: Make a change Stop a behavior End a dysfunctional relationship Change a career And more If you're going through a disappointing time, ask yourself these four questions: Is there an opportunity for change resulting from this disappointment?  Would I feel better if I take a specific action?  Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening again?  Am I open to moving past my disappointment? Asking yourself these questions can make it possible to flip your disappointment into a new opportunity or a new way of thinking. Be willing to move past the disappointment and into the possibility that perhaps something new, different, and better could result from this setback. Is there a new opportunity for change? Does experiencing this loss make it possible for a change? Sometimes, disappointment can be alleviated by changing a behavior or a circumstance. Taking action can feel liberating. Is there an opportunity for prevention? Some disappointment comes from poor planning or not having things in order. Is there something that can be done to prevent disappointment in the future? Consider this a great time to set things up for future success. Things go wrong, and that's ok. It’s a universal issue that no one can escape. Use your disappointment as a time to consider change, prevention, or an opportunity to grow and mature. #thegrowthzone #zigszagsandpivots #leadertransitioninstitute #lti
