About us
Lead to Read KC is a Kansas City nonprofit dedicated to supporting the social, emotional and reading skills that are foundational for student success by advancing our literacy platform and mobilizing community volunteers. Why? Only 20% of third graders in Kansas City public and charter schools are reading on grade level. (Source: Kansas City Action Fund) Reading is essential — not just for success in school, but for life. When children have trouble learning to read, it can kick off a devastating downward spiral. Poor reading skills make it hard to keep up in other subject areas. Struggling readers are more likely to report feeling lonely, angry, anxious and depressed. And, they're more likely to have behavior problems, end up in the juvenile justice system and drop out of school. Partner with us to help Kansas City children build a brighter future.

We think the Holmes Murphy team is awesome too! Thank you for collecting books for us and being Reading Mentors at Garcia.
Our Kansas City team is pretty darn awesome, if we do say so ourselves. Many of our team members there not only recently helped serve food at the Lakemary Center family picnic, but they also collected 154 books for Lead to Read KC and read to second grade students at a nearby elementary school. Love it, KC!

I’ve been fortunate to volunteer with them for a bit. It’s one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had volunteering. I encourage everyone in the KC area to take a look and see if you could help this incredible program with your time.

Week two of mentoring two young ladies this year at Lead to Read KC and my heart was overjoyed to be handed this by one of them. I read with her last year as well and it is my honor to be able to read with her again in addition to a second student! Lead to Read KC
