Operations Made Visible: Automate continuous improvement in manufacturing with Leela Visual Intelligence Platform

About us

Leela AI’s Leela Visual Intelligence Platform derives from groundbreaking machine learning research conducted at the MIT AI Lab. Our initial application is to improve productivity and safety in manufacturing. Unlike most video analytics software for manufacturing, Leela’s hybrid causal/neural networks can identify the root causes of problems and provide detailed operational insights and a big-picture understanding of operations. Leela can automatically identify and understand manufacturing processes while using 100x less data and 10x less time than typical analytics solutions.

In a New York Times op-ed piece that focuses on manufacturing, MIT professor and 2024 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics winner Daron Acemoglu argues that the US economy is ill-prepared for three emerging paradigm shifts: aging workers, the rise of AI, and a retrenchment from globalization. In manufacturing, he suggests that while robotics will help with the aging problem, what we really need is more worker training, especially in smart manufacturing. In AI, Acemoglu is concerned that Big Tech is racing to make advanced, human-like AIs that can replace workers when there is a greater need for AI “models to become more expert, better powered by higher-quality data, more reliable and more aligned with the existing knowledge and the information-processing capabilities of workers.” Finally, he calls for a “new federal agency tasked with identifying and funding the types of A.I. that can increase worker productivity and help us deal with looming labor shortages.” Hmm…sounds like a job for Leela Visual Intelligence Platform.   https://lnkd.in/d-Ugf-SG

I met Cyrus Shaoul a few years ago through Milan Minsky a cofounder @leela.ai . A bunch of super smart engineers taking on a problem that many companies don’t realize they have or it seemed impossible to fix Today every one talks about automation and machine to machine , but there are a lot of human beings walking around the factory floor. My name is Mark Manuel, and I liked this company right away and it was easy to remember: “Measure and Improve “MANUAL Manufacturing” Imagine making every shift better and more productive I like technology that works and helps my clients make more money I caught up with Cyrus Shaoul and one of the super smart engineers on his team. Please take a moment to listen and I encourage you to you to visit #IndustrialMARK #TheManufacturingAmbassador

Industrial machinery has been transformed by embedded computers running AI software for IIoT data collection. Yet are industrial equipment manufacturers using AI to help build their own products? The answer is yes, says two Bain & Co executives in a recent IndustryWeek post. A Bain survey showed that the industrial equipment makers have achieved considerable value from AI in supply chain management and predictive analytics. Other winning applications include “minimizing assembly defects and improving quality control; boosting productivity; and streamlining warehouse management.” The story cites one case study that may sound familiar to Leela AI customers: An unnamed OEM manufacturer “adopted AI-based video processing to track manual assembly activities, automate quality checks of manual assembly activities, and help optimize the use of resources and employees.” As a result, the OEM “reduced failures in the assembly process by as much as 70% while also cutting down efforts for quality checks by 50% for some lines.”   #visualintelligence #manufacturing #LeelaAI https://lnkd.in/g-WwrhWA

Every manufacturing business has untapped potential, whether it’s in improving efficiency, reducing safety incidents, or increasing yield. But the challenge is always the same: how do you unlock that value when you can’t fully see what’s happening on the shop-floor? That’s where Visual Intelligence comes in. By providing real-time visibility and understanding of operations, it helps businesses make smarter decisions and take the right actions. Visual Intelligence has some manufacturers deliver a 20% increase in capacity, reduced overtime hours by 30%, cut safety incidents by 50%, and improved yield by 10%. It’s about more than just fixing problems—it’s about unlocking hidden potential and driving true business value. When you can see what’s happening, and AI helps you understand and act on it, the possibilities are endless.

In complex systems, understanding cause and effect is key to making better decisions. But how do we teach machines to grasp this concept when they’re faced with new and unfamiliar data? That’s where causal learning comes in. Instead of seeing individual components—like a screwdriver or a rivet gun—it views them as part of a broader category: tools. By abstracting these concepts, causal networks can understand the relationship between actions and their effects more robustly. This symbolic approach enables the system to build a flexible network of knowledge. It can not only learn from familiar data but also apply its understanding to completely new situations—making decisions more accurately and faster than ever before. At the core of Visual Intelligence is a causal network that has learned cause and effect from observing the world, leading to more reliable learning and smarter decision-making, even when faced with new challenges.

In the latest AI in Manufacturing Podcast from Industry40tv, Kudzai Manditereza interviews Leela AI CEO Cyrus Shaoul, who explains how visual intelligence can help manufacturers identify and recreate operational excellence in performance, safety, and quality. Shaoul describes several customer case studies that have not yet been promoted on the Leela AI website. One customer achieved major increases in production capacity only four months after deployment, and another decreased safety noncompliance incidents by half. A third leveraged Leela Platform’s new quality control features to achieve substantial improvements in yield by identifying missed or incorrect production steps that had caused products to be scrapped. Shaoul discusses other topics including Leela AI’s edge server option, the power of MQTT for integrating data with other manufacturing software, and how Leela’s unique, fast-training causal-neural AI engine helps identifying actions in context.   #visualintelligence #manufacturing #LeelaAI https://lnkd.in/g9A5KAnC

In any manufacturing operation, there are moments of excellence—where everything works seamlessly—and moments where things fall apart. But what’s causing the difference? Is it the people, the machines, or the environment? The key is to take a holistic approach, looking at how people interact with their environment and the tools they use. By visually analyzing operations in real-time, you can detect when performance excels or when something’s holding it back—like a malfunctioning tool or a red light on a machine. Understanding these dynamics means you can continuously find those moments of excellence and elevate them. Whether it’s reducing wasted effort—like searching for parts—or identifying environmental factors, it’s about bringing order to the operational chaos and driving performance. With visual systems that observe the entire interaction between people, machines, and their surroundings, you’re able to support operational improvement in real-time, ensuring excellence is not only found but consistently elevated. To learn more about how to apply visual intelligence for manufacturing excellence, watch my conversation with Cyrus Shaoul, the Co-Founder and CEO of Leela AI—a company offering a Visual Intelligence Platform derived from groundbreaking machine learning research conducted at the MIT AI Lab.
