Legacy Solar Cooperative is one of 25 organizations in the US to win a Phase 1 “Community Power Accelerator Prize” through the federal Department of Energy. Community solar gives greater access to the meaningful benefits of solar energy generation, with positive impacts especially helping low-to-moderate income members, renters and those for whom traditional rooftop solar is unavailable. Legacy Solar Co-op is honored to be among the 25 Phase 1 organizations selected to expand a robust network of community solar projects. We work hard to bring meaningful benefits to our 280+ members and everyone we work with, and we want to especially expand the choice to generate your own energy and make a transition from fossil fuel sources. Legacy Solar Co-op has helped to place more than 4 megawatts of solar electric projects across Wisconsin. One megawatt equals 1 million watts or 1,000 kilowatts, roughly enough electricity for the instantaneous demand of 750 homes at once. Installations have included schools, churches, a fire district, businesses and residential units. Legacy Solar Co-op’s focus has been securing funding for solar projects through a bond program that allows individuals to “buy-in” to a solar installation for as little as $250. Joe Kremer will represent Legacy Solar Co-op in the accelerator and work to develop and fund more Wisconsin projects. A Wisconsin-based, member-owned cooperative providing solar education, consulting and services.
About us
The Legacy Solar Co-op is a Wisconsin member cooperative that strives to reduce wasteful and polluting energy practices and improve economic and ecologic conditions for our planet for future generations. We do this through solar projects that focus on customer-based energy savings. Who Is the Legacy Solar Co-op? We are business owners, wage earners, volunteers, retired professionals, church clergy, teachers, bus drivers, farmers, entrepreneurs, homeowners and renters from all walks of life. We come together because we feel drawn to the logic and the appeal of clean energy for the future of our planet and our children’s safety decades down the road. We call ourselves the Legacy Solar Co-op because once we put a solar project into use, it will quietly and beautifully provide clean energy for 4 decades or more – long after a lot of us have left this world. We want to create a growing legacy of clean renewable energy that supports our communities for the long haul. Who do we help? For the homeowner, Legacy Solar Co-op offers consulting services such as an in-home energy analysis and solar feasibility study. For a church, a library, a school, or any other non-profit, we can help design energy efficiency and solar projects and help capitalize the funds needed to get the project built. For those who don’t own a home or have access to a sunny roof or backyard, the Co-op lets you invest in community solar projects through Slice of Sun Solar Bonds. You can help the Co-op advance the development of solar projects in our communities and earn a modest return on your investment. In addition, our Switch-to-Solar (S2S) program derives Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from Wisconsin solar projects and sells the environmental value of this green energy to our members for a price that helps support even more solar development in our state. The “Legacy” in our name draws from the long-lasting benefits that solar can provide us all.

We remember the day we signed a contract with the Dane County Humane Society to help bring their solar project to life. There was a lot of excitement then, and we didn't how just how incredible their project would become. From looking at their electrical loads, discussing design options, getting bid requests for the project and discussing financing, we made sure they knew we were their advocate from start to finish. The end result is true to our principles as a cooperative, and we cooperated with some fantastic partners on this one. Thank you Storysage Productions for helping us capture the story: https://lnkd.in/gyujfPWg

Many long hours, all worth it, were spent on this project and we couldn't be more in awe of it. True Cooperation at work!
Going to be really hard for us to top this project. Over the past year, we've had the privilege of collaborating with Elise Couillard to report on the story of Dane County Humane Society's new solar flight pen. This week, we kicked off production 🎬 This project has been a tremendous feat of uniting the worlds of conservation and sustainability. We are extremely honored to be playing a small role in telling their story. Very large thank you to Dane County Humane Society, Legacy Solar Co-op, RENEW Wisconsin, Couillard Solar Foundation, WES Engineering, and Earth Origins for your hard work to get this project in the ground. Excited to share the completed video with everyone in July after grabbing final footage of the completed system 📸 #videoproduction #conservation #sustainability
