Our July to September update is out now. Indigenous Peoples still steward many of the world’s most biodiverse landscapes. This relationship between land and people has created an intimate knowledge of the environment—knowledge that is key to mitigating climate change and protecting biodiversity.   Nowhere is this more true than East Africa, which is home to thousands of acres of native grasslands and shrubby vegetation known as rangelands. Our latest blog post dives deeper into the Rangelands of East Africa, sharing how this bioregion is a key site for pursuing climate justice—but only when we center the lifeways of the pastoralists who have relied on and managed the lands for centuries. https://lnkd.in/eJjE8ujM #ThrivingFutures

We are so excited to announce that Legado is officially launching its newest partnership with Planet Indonesia. Our work together will take place in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, located on the island of Borneo. Nested in the 2 million-hectare Arabella Schwanner landscape, this region is home to Borneo’s largest remaining Orangutan population and many other critically endangered species. Our partnership starts by working with four Indigenous Dayak communities in Melawi district to secure land rights, reduce poverty, and lead across their holistic priorities toward building a Thriving Future. This is Legado’s first partnership in Southeast Asia, and we cannot wait to bring our Thriving Futures methodology to an entirely new landscape! By integrating Thriving Futures into Planet Indonesia’s Core Model approach, local and Indigenous community leadership will become central biodiversity conservation in the area. We look forward to sharing more updates as this partnership unfolds.

Last year, community members on Mount Namuli committed to a project to fulfill their health priority by preserving traditional medicinal plants: reforesting the hills and river banks surrounding Mount Namuli 🌱 🌱🌱 The goal is to grow and replant 1,000 native plant seedlings in ideal locations during the rainy season (late November), which local nursery workers and volunteers will tend to over the year as they prepare for another planting cycle. This project will kickstart an annual cycle of reforestation that promotes the overall well-being of the Mount Namuli communities—led by the community itself. We love this project because reforestation on Mount Namuli is about so much more than climate and biodiversity: it impacts health care, culture, livelihoods and more.
