About us
The Legal Aid Society is the nation's oldest and largest provider of legal services to the indigent. Founded in 1876, the Society provides a full range of civil legal services as well as criminal defense work, and juvenile rights representation in Family Court. Our core service is to provide free legal assistance to New Yorkers who live at or below the poverty level and cannot afford to hire a lawyer when confronted with a legal problem.

Appearing before a judge in handcuffs unfairly characterizes people as dangerous and untrustworthy, undermining their presumption of innocence and the integrity of the judicial system. Our new lawsuit seeks to end this practice: https://lnkd.in/e8E76NFG

Legal Aid’s pro bono work is vital to our mission of delivering justice in every borough. By partnering with private law firms to provide free legal services to those who cannot afford representation, Legal Aid ensures that low-income New Yorkers receive the support they need to navigate the legal system. This commitment helps address disparities in access to justice, empowering communities and fostering a more equitable society for everyone. We’d like to thank the following firms for their outstanding pro bono support of our Employment Law Unit: Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP The Cravath team assisted in litigating a case against one of NYC’s worst landlords (as designated by the Public Advocate), helping a superintendent and his partner secure a settlement for stable housing through their expert deposition practice. Wang Hecker LLP Wang Hecker led the early discovery stages, successfully pushing for mediation that resulted in a favorable settlement for their client. Petrillo Klein + Boxer LLP The team expertly prepared our client for depositions on a tight schedule and pressed for missing materials, significantly contributing to the successful settlement. Schlam Stone & Dolan LLP Alongside the Gender Equality Law Center, Schlam Stone & Dolan worked on a Fair Labor Standards Act case for a mistreated client. Their comprehensive support—from client meetings to negotiating settlement terms—was vital to achieving a positive outcome.

We’d like to thank Selendy Gay PLLC for their outstanding pro bono support in safeguarding affordable housing in New York City: Selendy Gay teamed up with the Civil Law Reform Unit to defend the Emergency Tenant Protection Act (ETPA) and Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act (HSTPA) against landlord challenges in CHIP v. City of New York. Their efforts - which went all the way to the US Supreme Court - secured the dismissal of all cases and upheld these vital protections, safeguarding affordable housing for low-income tenants.

Last night The Legal Aid Society proudly hosted our annual Pro Bono Publico Awards at the Prince George Ballroom, where we honored the firms and attorneys whose dedication to pro bono work has been instrumental in providing life-changing legal services to New Yorkers in need. This year, 31 law firms and 174 individual attorneys were recognized for their unwavering commitment to justice. Anthony Perez Cassino of Milbank LLP received the Public Interest Law Leadership Award for his extraordinary contributions to Legal Aid over more than 25 years. Most recently, Cassino and his team at Milbank have co-counseled our Prisoners Rights Project lawsuit against the NYC Department of Correction for its ongoing failure to provide incarcerated New Yorkers access to medical care, as well as working with our Juvenile Rights Practice lawsuit against the NYPD to protect the privacy of youth records. We also celebrated the outstanding efforts of Selendy Gay PLLC, whose attorneys helped secure a crucial victory in preserving New York’s Rent Stabilization Law - ensuring that affordable housing remains protected for families across the city. The inspiring efforts of Garrett Ordower from Scale LLP were also acknowledged. His work led to the exoneration of Steven Ruffin, a man wrongfully convicted of manslaughter in 1996, in collaboration with The Legal Aid Society. We extend our deepest gratitude to all of our pro bono partners. Your dedication enables us to continue providing the zealous and thoughtful representation that low-income New Yorkers need and deserve. Special thanks to our Attorney-in-Chief and CEO, Twyla Carter, Chief Counsel of the Pro Bono Practice, Lou Sartori, and the Honorable Rowan Wilson, Chief Judge of the State of New York, for their inspiring words at the event.
