About us

Legal Outreach prepares urban youth from underserved communities in New York City to compete at high academic levels by using intensive legal and educational programs as tools for fostering vision, developing skills, enhancing confidence, and facilitating the pursuit of higher education. We use law to attract junior high school students to academic programs that inspire and motivate them to strive for academic success. From the 8th through 12th grades, students work after school, on weekends, and during summers to build the skills and confidence they need to achieve their goals. Legal Outreach has been transforming the lives of students from underserved communities for 35 years.

Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Legal Outreach is currently seeking attorney mentors to guide students in our College Bound Program through our Constitutional Law Debate Program! As a mentor, you will have the opportunity to help NYC high school students prepare their arguments for moot court-style competitions where they will tackle important constitutional law issues. There is no appellate experience required! We are looking for attorneys across all practice areas who want to inspire, foster vision, and build confidence in our students. The time commitment is low (just a few hours per month during the school year!) and the impact is massive. If you or anyone you know might be interested in serving as a mentor, you can apply here!: https://lnkd.in/eKFUQH6j. You can also reach out to bkronstat@legaloutreach.org for more information.

Volunteers of Legal Service - VOLS, thank you once again for partnering with Legal Outreach. Our SLI students benefited immensely from Keighly Rector's presentation. What may have been intimidating translated into inspiration for our aspiring professionals. Thank you!

Immigration Attorney & Nonprofit Leader | Expert in Trauma-Informed Care & Pro Bono Mentorship | Fostering Resilience, Well-being & Empathy in Legal Services

After years of presenting to various audiences, I recently faced my most intimidating crowd: a group of soon-to-be high school students with aspirations of careers in the law. Their sharp questions about injustices in our legal system, especially immigration, kept me on my toes, made me reflect, and even gave me a few laughs. The highlight of the day was our mock asylum hearing for Alex Reyes, a fictional political activist from 'Country X.' Though the judge (their teacher) ultimately denied Alex's application, both defense and DHS teams showcased exceptional skills in their examinations and closing statements. Thank you to Shaleana Disorbo and Legal Outreach for inviting me to join! Hope to one day see some of these passionate and thoughtful voices as advocates in the field.

For the seventh year, Wafra was proud to host a summer internship program for high school students in partnership with Legal Outreach. Over the course of a week, the interns met with teams across the Firm, covering topics including investing, legal, IT, compliance, tax, and valuations. Wafra volunteers shared their own life experiences along with tips and best practices for educational and professional development. We are proud of the interns’ growth and progress throughout the program and look forward to watching their continued success. Wafra is pleased to continue to partner with Legal Outreach in its mission to close the “outlook, achievement and support” gaps that hinder access to college and professional careers for high school students from underserved communities in New York City.

We were grateful for the opportunity to host students from Legal Outreach in our New York office as part of its summer internship program. Legal Outreach empowers underserved youth through programs designed to help prepare them for higher education, professional careers and community leadership. The firm provided the students with a look at what it’s like to work in the legal field, including preparing for a mock court hearing and getting to know members of our team. Thanks to Jeffrey Zawadzki, Mark Indelicato and everyone who helped the students have a great experience! #tclaw #diversityinlaw

Thank you Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP for hosting 8 of our students this summer. It was an incredible opportunity for the students to immerse themselves in the firm's diverse practice areas and perform a mock oral argument. Your partnership over the past 2 decades has made a profound impact on our students!

On July 18th, Kramer Levin's 20th consecutive Legal Outreach Summer Internship came to an end. This year, the firm welcomed eight rising high school sophomores to learn about our practice areas, participate in skill-building exercises, and work on a major #litigation project which culminated in a mock oral argument. This program would not have been possible without the efforts of our exceptional volunteer group, including a number of dedicated attorneys, summer associates and SEO interns. We are thankful to Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for showing four of our students what it's like to work in a professional environment throughout the week. Thank you to the volunteers who helped coach our students in the negotiation workshops for their mock dispute.

We recently had the privilege of hosting four talented students from local area schools as part of the Legal Outreach Summer Internship Program (SIP). The SIP introduces rising sophomores to professional environments through simulated exercises. Participating firms provide a one-week internship to expose students to the practice of law and inspire their aspirations. Our volunteers led contract negotiation workshops, coaching the interns to represent clients in a mock dispute. The students learned about various aspects of being a lawyer, culminating in a successful negotiation exercise. Thank you to our interns and volunteers for making this program a success! Thank you to ACC New York City - Association of Corporate Counsel, Legal D&I Taskforce at CHANEL and CHANEL Community for your time in mentoring our students. This event will provide our students with the essential professional insights and connections that they will use as they head into college!

In collaboration with the Legal D&I Taskforce at CHANEL and CHANEL Community, members of ACC-NYC volunteered their time and talents to mentor nearly two dozen graduating seniors from the Legal Outreach. Hosted at CHANEL’s offices, students participated in a speed networking event with members, as well as attended a workshop on crafting a compelling personal statement for their LinkedIn profiles.    The Legal Outreach is a non-profit educational program that serves low-income, mostly minority, and/or first generation urban youth from underserved neighborhoods in New York City. Their goal is to provide social and academic support to students so they can matriculate to competitive colleges and pursue their career interests.
