We are thinking about energy all wrong. Eliminating carbon emissions from fossil fuels alone will not address our growing energy, environmental and financial challenges. Currently, we waste a tremendous amount of energy by not understanding how energy functions: how much energy our various systems demand, and how energy is produced, stored and transmitted from our energy grids. This lack of understanding creates fluctuating grid demand, which in turn leads to increased emissions, wasted capital and greater financial and environmental risk. The end result is uncertainty and volatility in energy markets. While we tend to think of our global energy and environmental challenges as macro-issues, only addressable by government institutions and global stakeholders, we not only have the power to make the needed changes at the individual level, but it is also essential for the realization of significant change. It’s always a little bittersweet when a conference ends :) The inaugural Data Center Frontier Trends Summit was a blast! I had the honor of closing out the event with a wonderful panel. Chris Downie of Flexential discussed the need to design and build AI-ready facilities. That includes high density and liquid cooling. However, he did an AMAZING job reminding us that there will still be a mix of workloads. Let’s not forget about traditional compute. It’s not going anywhere. Daniel Crosby of Legend Energy Advisors discussed the need for new and diverse power sources, including RNG. He made some fantastic points about SMRs and power resilience. Erica T. was honestly one of my favorites. Her discussion around liquid cooling and its impact on our industry was insightful. We’ve reached the limits of how much air can dissipate heat from mechanical equipment. Liquid cooking will make a significant impact moving forward. I discussed the “GPU Rental Risk” and how it’s essential to understand how these systems will be utilized. I went into the vastly different depreciation cycles as compared to legacy configuration. I also touched on this industry’s massive opportunity to impact inference use cases. Finally, Rich Miller brought it all home by discussing balance in the data center space as many shifted to AI. Traditional workloads will still be essential to support, but working with AI-ready and liquid cooling-ready solutions will be critical. I really enjoyed the entire conference!
