I’ve had several people ask me over the last few years why I’m still in Texas. I love my state, but we unfortunately don’t have the best reputation with many people when it comes to many issues.
My response is normally centered around 4 concepts:
🌳 Place
I feel connected, rooted, in the physical place of Texas. From the seaside to the hill country: the landscape feels like home.
💛 People
My community of literal and found family is here. Being near them is important to both them and me.
🎯 Purpose
My mission is to drive equity and excellence in education and economic advancement. I could argue that there is no better place to do that work, especially for Hispanic women, than in Texas.
✊ Privilege
I fought hard to both earn seats to sit in and build tables to sit at. If everyone who can leave does, who’s left to fight for the rest?
Last year at ReThink Austin (by Austin Urban Technology Movement (AUTMHQ)), Keyona Meeks shared a similar sentiment regarding her own equity building work when she much more succinctly said, “We are here…I need to be here.”
