Today marks the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)! On July 26, 1990, after decades of self-advocacy, people with disabilities gained equal protection for their rights under U.S. law. Since that milestone, advocates within the disability community and their allies have made tremendous progress toward removing barriers to access through considerable action, including litigation, structured negotiations, and self-organizing. So, as we recognize the #ADA’s anniversary and the final weeks of #DisabilityPride Month, we’re celebrating this progress. But we’re also reflecting on the work ahead that’s required to build a truly inclusive, equitable world. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is more than twice that for people without disabilities, and digital accessibility barriers remain widespread: Research by WebAIM found that more than 95% of the top one million website home pages are inaccessible.
