Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School & Founding Director of the LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence
Happy #Pride from The White House with Cody Rigsby, Kellan E. Baker, Samir Luther, Tim McCarthy, Mike Dillon, and so many more! First Lady Dr. Jill Biden closed her remarks by saying, "When you leave here, to go back into a place that still needs so much change, take that with you. Let it be a reminder that you don’t face these battles alone. You are never alone. I love you. Your President loves you." This echoed the closing of my address last week at the Society for Epidemiologic Research. My final call to action was: "Ensure that all of your colleagues belong. For those of you who have ever been told that you don’t belong in this field, in this society, or in your organization, know that you do belong."

Op-ed in today's Boston Globe from our Founding Director Brittany Charlton about the urgent need for advancing LGBTQ health equity through public health and medicine 👇 👇 👇 As she says, "Public health and medical professionals have critical roles in addressing the health crises facing LGBTQ communities. Yet even elite institutions aren’t giving future leaders the skills and understanding they need to do their part. For example, medical school students are not routinely trained to take a social history that’s inclusive of LGBTQ experiences. Public health students are not trained on how, or even why, they should collect sexual orientation and gender identity data along with other demographic data like age, race, ethnicity, and income. These gaps hamper our ability to document inequities, develop policies to address those inequities, and appropriately screen and treat patients who may be more vulnerable to certain health conditions due to minority stress."

Check out my latest op-ed published today in the Boston Globe. I argue we have to create an infrastructure within public health and medicine to advance LGBTQ health equity 🌈 "This is undoubtedly a moment of adversity for LGBTQ communities. Yet it’s also an opportunity to demand and drive change. This month, colleagues and I are launching the LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence, a joint venture between the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. Our mission is to advance health equity for LGBTQ communities with a focus on training to prepare the next generation of LGBTQ health leaders; research to expand the evidence base of LGBTQ health; and dissemination to inform policy makers, health care providers, and the larger public about how to improve LGBTQ health most effectively. I’m hopeful that our center can serve as a model for change, but we need other institutions to follow suit." Read here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eGwiZXGC #LGBTQHealthExcellence

This #PrideMonth, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School have launched the LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence—Harvard Chan School & Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, a research center that seeks to train future LGBTQ+ health leaders, expand the knowledge base of LGBTQ+ health, and disseminate research to the public and key policymakers to advance health equity. Health data empowers us to craft responsive solutions to health challenges, from industry initiatives to community health programs to statewide policy measures. With a better understanding of the health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ communities, and how those intersect with longstanding racial health disparities, we can create lasting change. While there is a lot of work ahead to address LGBTQ inequities, we can do this work collectively. So glad to all be in this fight together! #LGBTQHealthExcellence #PrideMonth
As we kick off pride month, I recently had the privilege of visiting the LGBT center for Excellence at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute It’s disheartening to recognize that numerous studies consistently highlight the greater health disparities experienced by LGBTQIA+ folks compared to their non-LGBTQIA+ counterparts in our society. However, amidst these challenges it was truly inspiring to witness the collective efforts of numerous outstanding organizations and individuals uniting to elevate LGBTQIA+ health equity as a focal point for their research. With Harvard University and the Harvard Pilgrim Institute leading the way, I eagerly anticipate seeing this much needed research come to fruition. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH 🌈
