Lighting a Path Out of Poverty
About us
Our mission is to provide education and health interventions which "light a path out of poverty" and bring hope for a brighter future for impoverished students and communities in Kenya. Our Vision is To establish Light Up Hope as a leader in initiatives that achieve social and economic advancement for individuals and elevate the economic development of Kenya. We believe that simply being born into poverty should not dictate the end of an individual's story. Central to our mission is ensuring that women, children and young adults from impoverished communities in Kenya can embrace hope for their futures. We provide hope for orphans, children and young adults who were born into under-resourced families and impoverished communities. At the time of selection, our beneficiaries meet the criteria for poverty as defined by the United Nations: “Poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, as well as the lack of participation in decision-making.” We place a special emphasis on empowering women and girls to strive for gender equality and boost economic growth, that allows for individuals to break out of the poverty cycle in the communities where we work.

🌟 Meet Lilian, a fearless force from a predominantly patriarchal community, breaking barriers in the world of STEM. With only three other girls in her class, she faces challenges head-on—often navigating doubts and jokes about physical strength during practical sessions. But Lilian refuses to let that hold her back! 💪✨ Thanks to the support of WOVEN, she finds the strength to recharge and stay focused on her dreams. One of her greatest gifts? Access to incredible mentors who help her navigate the path ahead. In a world where connections can open doors, WOVEN is empowering girls like Lilian to build the networks they need to succeed. 🌐💼 At "The Fearless Camp," she connected with peers from diverse backgrounds, feeling inspired instead of intimidated. Lilian realized the boundless possibilities that education offers and embraced her journey with open arms. In just two years, she will graduate as an Aerospace Engineer, and she’s in awe of her achievements. 🚀💖 Lilian's story reminds us all that with determination and support, we can rise above any challenge. Keep reaching for the stars! #Inspiration #GirlPower #STEM #WOVEN #AerospaceEngineer

I met with Chochole during my July trip to Kenya and she is truly an inspiration! I know her challenging background, growing up in the eastlands of Nairobi, which is where Light Up Hope first got started. I first met Chochole two years ago when she was a beneficiary of our school feeding program at Kayole North Primary. Her inherent talent and optimism is a force to be reckoned with as is her mastery of English. Girls like Chochole inspire the work of Light Up Hope where we believe that being born into poverty - does not have to be the end of your story.

According to the International Monetary Fund “The economic and social imperative for women’s economic empowerment is clear. Greater gender equality boosts economic growth and leads to better development outcomes…and, in turn, supports economic resilience”. Our Women of Vision Education iNitiative (WOVEN) supports economic empowerment of talented young Kenyan women from vulnerable and impoverished backgrounds. One of the ways we accomplish this is through one-on-one mentorship with professional Kenyans who volunteer their time to become mentors for our students. By matching our students with mentors who work professionally in the industries which our students are studying, we are able to help guide them towards employability. We accomplish this through workplace readiness skills, financial management advice, leadership development, entrepreneurship and project management training. In July, we held a Mentorship Tea with 25 Nairobi based mentors and 27 students. Among the activities were presentations by student representatives on their community service projects, such as Winnie (pictured here) who is a final year nursing student. Winnie’s group project involves educating other university girls on the challenges of student motherhood and how to gain access to proper contraceptives. Winnie shares “from my own experience, I know it is not easy being a student mother - therefore I want to help my classmates make informed decisions about contraceptives”. Our mentors cheered for our student projects and each shared their personal words of wisdom and encouragement to our students to inspire them as they prepare to transition to the workforce.

Despite females constituting 51% of Kenya's population, 49% of women in the country are illiterate. While 80.8% of rural girls enroll in primary education, only 14.3% complete secondary education, starkly highlighting the educational inequality faced by girls in Kenya. Read more here (https://lnkd.in/ddVMhz6t) At Light Up Hope, we have recognized the critical need to invest in the quality education of girls. Currently, we are supporting 164 girls through high school across the county, ensuring they have access to financial assistance, mentorship, and psychological support to excel and graduate into universities. Our program is designed to instill resilience in our female beneficiaries by expanding their ambitions and challenging societal limitations on girls' intellectual capacity. Our dedicated efforts have yielded remarkable results: 50% of our beneficiaries’ transition to higher learning institutions, significantly higher than the national average of 20%. Yet, we believe there is more work to be done. Our ultimate goal is to educate over 1,000 girls in Kenya and achieve a 100% transition rate to higher education institutions. We are committed to supporting more girls through high school and beyond, helping them break barriers and reach their full potential. Join us in this mission. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of these young women and help build a brighter future for all. #SupportGirlsEducation #EducationForAll #GenderEquality
