During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city experienced a building boom, with architects here contributing to the rise of tall buildings across the U.S. Louis Curtiss, a standout architect of that era, left his mark with innovative designs like the Boley Building and the Bryant Building. But the crown jewel of our skyline? The Power and Light Building. Completed in 1931, this Art Deco icon was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River and remains a beloved symbol of Kansas City. We were honored to hear stories from former residents of the historic Steptoe Neighborhood, highlighting the legacy of Penn School—the first school west of the Mississippi dedicated to educating Black children. We’re especially proud to be a female-owned firm representing an all-female high school whose mission is to “empower young women to change the world.” Our team, along with St. Teresa's leadership and the design team, presented detailed plans featuring landscaping and operational changes designed to minimize disruption to the community.
