Did you know? We focus on a particular theme each month - each one a topic that has strong links to literacy. In October, the theme is Health Literacy. You can find some resources on this page: https://lnkd.in/gU6fisw5 And we hope you'll plan to come to Best of Texas at the end of the month, which will explore this same topic! https://lnkd.in/gQQJeyuz #LitTXThemeOfTheMonth

Connecting and equipping Texas literacy programs through resources, training, networking, and advocacy.
About us
Literacy Texas is the statewide literacy coalition, connecting and equipping Texas literacy providers with resources, training, networking, and advocacy. We believe every person in Texas has a right to literacy. We understand that literacy is more than just reading and writing: it is competency and understanding; it is achieving goals to reach our full potential as members of our shared society. We provide leadership, professional development, and support to community-based organizations providing literacy services, and to adult education programs throughout the state to build capacity and improve literacy levels in Texas. Our vision is that every literacy organization in Texas will have the resources it needs to help as many people as possible learn basic literacy skills in order to participate fully in society. Literacy Texas members work tirelessly across all corners of this great state. We support them through strong key services including a flagship conference featuring best practices for adult educators. Additionally, Literacy Texas offers a series of free, one-day symposia held throughout the state in partnership with local literacy organizations. We have a special focus on providing professional development for tutors, staff, instructors, and volunteers at nonprofit organizations providing adult literacy services. Literacy Texas encourages and incubates literacy groups around the state to increase their capacity through collaboration. At the state level, we advocate on behalf of the adult education community to ensure their voices are heard in all areas of business and government. "My dad and I had a complicated relationship. I loved him, and I know he loved me, but his mental health and substance use issues kept him from being the parent I needed and kept our family in a constant state of instability and stress. He refused to get help, and he lost his career, his family, and his health in the process. By 2018, he was homeless..." 2024 Student Achievement - ABE/HSE Jacqueline Turrubiartes | Ysleta Community Learning Center “After years of challenging circumstances, including incarceration and time in a behavioral center, Jacqueline realized that education could be the key to transforming her life. While incarcerated, she began her journey towards earning a GED, dedicating her time to studying and passing two of the required exams. It was a small but significant step towards a brighter future. Upon her release, her path was not straightforward; she found herself in a behavioral center where many might have given up hope. However, Jacqueline continued her studies through the Ysleta Community Learning Center and passed the remaining two GED exams. With her GED in hand, she felt a sense of accomplishment that had previously eluded her. Now, equipped with the confidence that comes from achieving a significant educational milestone, she enrolled in an Integrated Education Training class to earn certifications in Microsoft Excel and Freight Dispatching. This new phase of her learning journey has opened doors to employment opportunities she never thought possible. Jacqueline’s literacy learning has not only given her a sense of achievement, it has also paved the way for meaningful employment and stability. She can now support herself, contribute to her community, and inspire others with her story of resilience and determination. What started as a necessity has blossomed into a new beginning, proving that with education, even the most difficult paths can lead to success.” https://lnkd.in/gzSUxVXY Huge congratulations to this very deserving award recipient! 🤩 🥳 💛
