Congratulations to Living Roofs, Inc. on their 2024 Landscape Design Award of Merit for "Camp Mending Heart Green Roofs." This project won in Category III (Residential More Than $100K). From the designer: "This five-acre project site includes nine fully vegetated roofs covering four separate buildings resting along the shore of a mountain lake deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, a region known for its biologically diverse habitats and species. From the outset, the owners desired something different than the typical mountain lake house, beginning with a cascading array of flat roofs each packed full of plants reflecting the region’s ecological abundance and integrating the buildings with the forested site." • Floating at the edge of Lindenwood Lake, The Sto Teaching Pavilion at the Highlands Biological Station (HBS) is a multipurpose pavilion for learning, quiet reflection, and immersion in the rich ecology of the surrounding forests, wetlands, bogs, and pollinator gardens. This floating classroom is blanketed by a vegetated roof which surprises and delights visitors with its seasonal blooms and leafy foliage while demonstrating the benefits of green roofs. Living Roofs, Inc. designed the green roof system to support native species endemic to the Highlands Plateau, one of the most biodiverse ecological niches in the world. The green roof plantings mimic the surrounding pollinator plantings and visually and ecologically integrate the outdoor classroom pavilion into the site and the narrative of the Highlands Biological Station. Although small in size, this green roof has an outsized impact— embodying the broader goals of HBS and acting as a living laboratory and outdoor classroom. #livingroofsinc #HighlandsBiologicalStation #highlandsnaturecenter #landscapeonstructure #vegetatedroof #LRIDdesign #LRIconstruction #LRIcare&maintenance #climateresilience #nativeplants

  • Infrastructure can and should be green, rich in biodiversity, and multi-purpose. Plants are powerful! We think meadows in the sky are the future and a crucial tool for tackling the challenges of a changing climate. When designed and managed correctly, these systems deliver critical ecosystem services while creating beautiful and thriving plant communities for people and pollinators.  The vegetated roof on this hotel in Chapel Hill is an inspiring example of how we can transform roofs into resilient living infrastructure that provides a cascade of community-wide social and environmental benefits while helping communities be more resilient to climate change and extreme weather. #landscapeonstructure #resilient #naturalinfrastructure #livingroofs #greenroofbenefits #biodiversity #greenstormwaterinfrastructure #vegetatedroofs #climateresilience

  • Living Roofs, Inc. is back up and running, a testament to our resilience. Our crews are back to work at projects in Charlotte and Raleigh beginning this week. We still do not have water service, and many are without electricity. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we balance a return to operations while recovering from the devastation in our city and region. Thank you to our partners and clients - your kindness and support have blown us away. We look forward to returning to work designing and building natural infrastructure for the future— like this vegetated roof in WNC. #livingroofsinc #landscapeonstructure #vegetatedroof #westernnorthcarolina #climateresilience
