I hear many parents & guardians talk about wanting to invest for their children, but aren't sure where to start.... Here is a brief introduction to 3 of the most common investment accounts you can open for a minor. 529 Plan 🎓: tax-advantaged account specifically designed for education expenses. Whether it's college tuition, books, or other qualified expenses, the earnings in a 529 plan grow tax-free, providing a powerful tool for saving for your child's educational journey. Custodial Roth IRA 💼: this account becomes available to you once your child / loved one starts earning their own income. Contributions are made with after-tax dollars, but the withdrawals in retirement (age 59.5+) are tax-free UGMA (Uniform Gifts to Minors Act) Account 💰: a flexible option to invest & gift money to minors. Investments in a UGMA account are held in the child's name but managed by a custodian until the child reaches the age of majority (18 in most states). It's simple to say you want to pay off debt, or save more... but when it comes down to it, it can be difficult to hold yourself accountable to achieving that goal. From my perspective, when you don't understand WHY you are doing something, it's easy to not do it.... oh duh, that makes sense! You need to dig in and get more specific and intentional about why it is you want to achieve your financial goals. Below are a list of questions you can use to reflect on. Your answers will better help you identify your values, which helps us determine our WHY.
