In 2017, I attended the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center 's (TMCEC) Prosecutors Training as a prosecutor for the City of Dallas. Yesterday, I presented at TMCEC's Juvenile Caae Manager's Conference on Trauma-Informed Care. Thank you, TMCEC, for the invitation to share how critical it is 1) REALIZE the depth and impact of trauma in all our lives, especially our youth who are justice-involved 2) RECOGNIZE the signs and symptoms of trauma, 3) RESPOND in a way that is in line with knowledge of trauma that allows people to feel heard and seen and to heal and 4) actively RESIST the tendency to respond out of learned/conditioned behaviors that retraumatize. An effective Trauma-Informed Care approach does not solely rest with front-line team members in terms of how they interact with and serve our youth. In fact, it is critical that the entire organization and system adopt a TIC Approach so that our front line team members receive the care and support they need to serve well. Secondary Trauma is real. Vicarious Trauma is real. We all can benefit from shifting our perspectives from "What's wrong WITH you?" to "What happened TO you." #LSJA #ReImagineJustice #TransformingJustice #TransformingLives
