Congratulations to the April Parker Foundation on the grand opening of the Futures First Temporary Navigation Center this morning! This center will provide a transitional home for 24 young folks with supportive services, amenities, and most importantly a safe place to lay their heads while getting connected to permanent housing. Thanks for stepping up and joining in on our commitment to end youth homelessness in Long Beach. By joining hands on this work, we can prevent a lifetime of homelessness for future generations.

Last week, we cut the ribbon on a new truck charging facility with 4 GEN LOGISTICS LLC, which will help charge dozens of electric drayage trucks, removing tons of emissions from cargo movement at the Port. We broke ground on this facility less than a year ago, and it’s wonderful to see phase one of this facility now up and ready to go. Congratulations to the 4 GEN team!

It’s great to welcome the League of California Cities back to Long Beach for their 2024 Annual Conference and Expo! Leaders from across the Great State of California are in Long Beach this week to network, share best practices, and brainstorm to make our cities and state more sustainable, resilient, and stronger for the next generation. Thank you to League of CA Cities President Dan Parra, Executive Director and CEO Carolyn Coleman, and the team for inviting me to give the welcome address this afternoon.

It was great to welcome the African American Mayors Association to Long Beach today for a convening on tackling the important issue of organized retail crime affecting our communities. Cities are hubs of innovation, where the rubber meets the road—and when we get it right, our regions and beyond get it right.

I recently joined Long Beach Unified School District for their Partnership and Pathways Celebration, where we uplifted the work of our great schools and community partners in creating opportunities for our students. Right now, we have an important opportunity to support the next generation, whether by removing barriers to education with programs like the College Promise or helping recent graduates start careers in public service with the Public Service Corps. Together, let's keep building a brighter future for our youth.

Big #SpaceBeach news: For the first time, the National Space Council’s User Advisory Group met in California today—and we brought them here to Long Beach. They typically meet at the White House with VP Harris as chair, and today we got to show them why our city is home to one of America’s fastest-growing space clusters. This is a big deal! Thank you to NSC UAG Executive Member Mandy Vaughn, Deputy Director of the Policy & Strategic Comms Division with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration SCaN Program James J. Miller, the Port of Long Beach, and the other partners for joining me this afternoon to talk Space Beach, STEM education, and more. And, special thanks to Dr. Sian Proctor—an astronaut and the first woman of color to pilot a spacecraft—for signing a copy of her coloring book for my daughters. They’re going to be incredibly inspired.
