"I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet."—Gustav Klimt Gustav Klimt, Austrian symbolist painter, passed away on this day in 1918. Did you know he was deeply influenced by Japanese art? From 1900 onward Klimt became famous above all as a "painter of women." He created about one large-format portrait of a woman per year, in which he applied the principles of Art Nouveau—flatness, decoration, gold leaf application.

The Mohn Art Collective (Hammer Museum, LACMA, MOCA | The Museum of Contemporary Art), partnered with East West Bank Foundation, joins a coalition of major arts organizations and philanthropists in L.A. led by the J. Paul Getty Trust to create the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, a resource for artists and arts workers across disciplines who have lost residences, studios, livelihoods, or have otherwise been impacted by the devastating Los Angeles fires. This fund—supported by national and international institutions—has launched with $12 million and is continuing to grow. Beginning Monday, January 20, artists and arts workers can apply for an emergency grant through the Center for Cultural Innovation, which will administer the fund. We are following other similar initiatives and we understand this fund is one step in a long road to recovery for our creative communities. Our hearts go out to all who have been displaced, lost residences and studios, and now face enormous challenges caused by this tragedy. To our beloved L.A. County, we’re here for you. So many need places and spaces—for a moment to grieve, reflect, hope, commune. For whatever art can offer, we’re extending 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟏𝟕. Tavares Strachan forged the words “We Are In This Together" by hand in neon six feet wide. Collapsing the words into a continuous phrase, he complicates the experience of reading them. The artist often uses language to beckon viewers to consider themes of invisibility, displacement. This work is currently on view in our exhibition "Imagining Black Diasporas: 21st-Century Art and Poetics."
