Last week, the Lucas Museum, in collaboration with partners from the University of Southern California, hosted academics, curators, and other thought partners from across the country for the daylong symposium “Speculative Visions: Science Fiction and American Visual Culture.” As part of Getty’s city-wide initiative PST ART: Art & Science Collide, we explored various themes represented across many works of narrative art in the Lucas Museum’s collection and capped the evening off with a fantastic double-feature of “The Wormwood Star” (1956) and “Barbarella” (1968). Thank you to the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the Visual Studies Research Institute, the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries, and the USC Fisher Art Museum, as well as our incredible speakers and participants for making it an engaging and thought-provoking day! https://lnkd.in/gSpZybcB

A new museum dedicated to the art of visual storytelling under development in Los Angeles
About us
As the first museum to focus exclusively on storytelling through images, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art believes that visual storytelling can connect us. Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the museum holds a growing collection that includes paintings, sculptures, murals, photography, comic art, illustrations, and the arts of filmmaking. Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect, the Lucas Museum will open in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park in 2026. Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson and led by director and CEO Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Lucas Museum was designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect and will open in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park in 2026. An 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA will embrace the museum’s 300,000-square-foot building, which will feature expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail, and events.

Can art save the world? 🌍 That’s the question The New York Times’ Farah Nayeri explored after the recent Art for Tomorrow conference in Venice. Participants discussed the critical role of art in fostering a just world. During a compelling panel discussion, Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Director and CEO Sandra Jackson-Dumont shared a powerful perspective: “The very act of building a museum is a political act...We actually can be the place where discourse happens, where the dialogue about these issues surfaces…If we can elevate museums as a location for that kind of dialogue, I think we have a major future.”

From galaxies far, far away to the future galleries of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, George Lucas continues to unveil the power of storytelling and inspire a new generation of storytellers and artists. We're incredibly proud to celebrate our visionary co-founder for receiving the Honorary Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. https://lnkd.in/g3x8ynzM

There's nothing better than summertime in L.A. (once we get past the June gloom, of course). We're delighted to see Expo Park and our neighbors the California Science Center, California African American Museum, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County listed among L.A. Times's "superb things to do" this summer (we agree)! https://lnkd.in/gnMjW35x

We’re excited to have been featured in the recent New York Times special section on museums in an article about the growing importance of outdoor space in museums’ shifting priorities—as they increasingly focus on “education, sustainability and a much-needed sense of civic welcome.” Our 11-acre campus will include expansive new green space for all to enjoy designed by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA. https://lnkd.in/g3mVU3zU
