In 1962, he gained global attention when his company extinguished a fire at the Gassi Touil gas field in Algeria that was nicknamed the Devil's Cigarette Lighter, as its flame was nearly 450 feet high. The paper would expand and shrink during the humid summer conditions, resulting in poor quality images.
