About us

Founded in 1997, MMW Architects, is committed to contributing positively to the built environment, while working in harmony with the natural environment. We create places that enrich life’s daily rituals and activities through beauty and efficiency. Our projects respond to the land and climate, as well as to the cultural and historic setting, revealing the inherent attributes of time and place. The play of natural light in our buildings encourages the occupant to experience the passage of seasons. We take a holistic view of resource efficiency and sustainability in each project. Site planning, building design, systems design and material selection are interconnected facets of responsible resource efficient design. Good decisions save the owner money over the life of the building and contribute to a sustainable future. At a community level, we believe sustainable buildings must be well designed, beautiful buildings that work within the urban fabric and the cultural context of our city. We strive for our projects to be a vital and important part of the connective tissue of our community, creating settings that nourish healthy human relationships and continue our shared history of dwelling within the place. Architecture has the power to make a difference in the world. We’re committed to creating design solutions that contribute to this philosophy in all our work.

Last Friday, our office got into the Halloween spirit with a spook-tacular fall event! The afternoon was filled with pumpkin carving, festive tunes, and plenty of treats and drinks to go around. Both our team and their little ones showed off their creativity with some amazing pumpkin designs! Shoutout to Emily for the "Most Architectural" pumpkin, Jackie’s magical fairy pumpkin house for “Most Creative,” and Beth & Abby’s charming owl pumpkin for taking home the “People’s Choice” award! 🏆 Special thanks to Trust Land Farm & Turner Farms 406 for the awesome pumpkin selection! Now, we’re all eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Great Pumpkin! 🎃 ✨

The Hellgate High School remodel has revitalized this historic building, breathing new life into its halls. The project had three key objectives: to create a central hub by relocating the library and commons to the heart of the school, enhance safety and navigation by establishing a clearly defined main entrance, and extend the building's longevity by upgrading the HVAC system and reinforcing its structure. The Technology Campus design acknowledges Missoula's history, engages the community, and creates a thriving place for people to live, work, and play. The architecture is inspired by the industrial roots of the Old Sawmill District and the future of technology, innovation, and learning. Brick and steel were chosen as the primary exterior materials for their timeless nature and contextual quality. All sides of the buildings are comprised of oversized windows to connect people within them to the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The project includes several sustainable features, such as carbon-reduced concrete, rooftop solar, passive solar, a wood structure, advanced lighting controls, electric car charging, and recycled building materials. As an office, we engage in community leadership through various organizations and volunteer activities in and around Missoula. During our most recent office volunteer outing with some of Morrison-Maierle's staff, we successfully collected 28 bags of litter from the section of highway MMW adopted in the Missoula area on behalf of the Bitterroot Climate Action Group. We take great pride in contributing to the cleanliness and well-being of our community! 🤗

This past weekend marked the grand opening of Rocky Mountain Gardens & Exploration Center! Designed to be a space for teaching, learning, and growth, the gardens welcome both Missoula County residents and visitors alike. MMW Architects had the privilege of designing and assisting in the construction of a beautiful shade structure for the gardens, a true testament to the power of collaboration. We’d like to extend a special thank you to Chisel & Mallet Woodworking, Missoula County, Climate Smart Missoula, United Way of Missoula County, and Apex Engineering Services for their invaluable contributions. At MMW Architects, we take great pride in giving back to our community!
