Our friend and former patient, Emi Perry, is among 15 elite parathletes who will represent the United States at this summer’s Paralympic Games as members of the 2024 U.S. Paralympic Triathlon Team. Paratriathlon competition takes place September 1st and 2nd in Paris. The U.S. has won the most triathlon medals in Paralympic Games history with nine since triathlon made its Paralympics debut at the Rio 2016 Games. Emi Perry started competing as an adaptive athlete following a spinal cord injury in 2017. She says the physical therapist who treated her at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation introduced her to triathlons. This is Emi’s Paralympic debut. She is the 2022 U.S. Paratriathlon National Champion. She has earned six podiums and two wins in World Triathlon events. Born in Philadelphia, Emi moved with her family to Osaka, Japan, when she was a baby and then moved back to the U.S. in 2011.

Doctors, therapists, nurses, and staff from across Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation will travel to Wildwood, NJ, to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to ride the waves at "They Will Surf Again." The free, one-day event takes place on Sunday, August 4. "They Will Surf Again" is a program of Life Rolls On, a non-profit that serves as a resource and advocate for people affected by spinal cord injury and other disabilities. Since 2012, Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation has sent more than 700 volunteers to They Will Surf Again to donate their expertise by helping persons with disabilities get up and down the beach using special beach wheelchairs, get in and out of wet suits, and assist surfers in the water as they ride the waves. To register for the event as a volunteer or participant, visit https://lnkd.in/e3mvt6Ae.

Preparing the garden for the summer growing season helps patients achieve new levels of independence. Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation’s robust creative arts therapy programs include horticultural therapy. These photos were taken last month on the 6th floor rooftop at our Center City inpatient hospital. Under the supervision and assistance of their therapists, patients planted new vegetables, herbs and flowers. Common gardening tasks allowed them to work on specific functional physical goals like standing tolerance, balance, fine motor control, and cognitive goals such as memory and problem solving.

Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation celebrates #Juneteenth! Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is a celebration of the end of slavery in the US. Jefferson staff wore Juneteenth-themed t-shirts in honor of the holiday and red velvet cupcakes were distributed to employees.  These photos were taken at our Elkins Park campus today.

Staff at Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Center City hosted a surprise 24th birthday party for Bank, who is recovering from injuries that occurred when he was hit by a truck as a pedestrian. Bank is a law student from Thailand. He has been undergoing intensive inpatient rehabilitation for months. Members of his care team and staff have become like a second family to Bank and his mother during his inpatient stay. There were plenty of treats and gifts. The birthday card they gave to Bank was even written in Thai!
