When Gretchen Rosado started her college search, she knew she wanted hands-on research experience. Enter, the University of Pittsburgh and Dr. Miguel Brieño-Enriquez. His lab and work, focused on learning from the naked mole-rat's fertility across the life course, served as not only a launchpad for Gretchen's career, but also a place where she could fully be herself. Surrounded by other native Spanish speakers, at the Brieño-Enriquez lab at Magee-Womens Research Institute, she feels safe and understood. More: https://lnkd.in/eZmw-7si

We are changing the way the world treats women.
About us
WE ARE CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD TREATS WOMEN. Women are different, right from the beginning. But until 1992, when we were founded, there wasn’t even a research institute dedicated to women’s issues. Today, Magee-Womens Research Institute is solving real world problems and impacting lives—in the fields of cancer, heart disease, fertility, HIV, Alzheimer’s and more. But the potential is boundless. Anything is possible when the country’s largest women’s research institute partners with a world-class women’s hospital.

In 2024, more than 300,00 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer, with rising numbers among women under 50. These statistics highlight the critical need for advocacy, awareness, and research — efforts that rock icon and 2024 Women Who Rock™ Benefit Concert headliner Melissa Etheridge has passionately championed. Diagnosed in 2004 and cancer-free for over a decade, she uses her platform to drive awareness and support lifesaving research at Magee-Womens. This #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, take action by scheduling your mammogram, encouraging others to do the same, and advocating for vital research. Your voice can make a real difference in the fight against breast cancer. 📸 Pictured: Melissa Etheridge touring the labs at Magee-Womens Research Institute, exploring the lifesaving research conducted every day.

Katherine (Katie) McConnell, a 3-year breast cancer survivor, found that running played a crucial role during her treatments and recovery: “Running helped me so much during my cancer treatments and continues to help me now. To me, it’s therapeutic and rhythmic — time for myself to process what is happening.” Katie is giving back to the hospital that saved her life by running as part of the Magee-Womens Run for a Reason charity team. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, join her in signing up for the 2025 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon to support vital women’s cancer research at Magee-Womens 👉 Sign up here: https://bit.ly/3X7QCwZ

#MetastaticBreastCancer is stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to another part of the body. For patients facing this diagnosis, the emotional and financial challenges can be overwhelming. In 2017, along with her colleagues at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, Dr. Margaret “Peg” Rosenzweig, a Distinguished Service Professor of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh, launched a supportive care pilot program to address inequities in cancer treatment. This #MetastaticBreastCancerAwarenessDay, learn more about how Magee-Womens cares beyond the clinic: https://lnkd.in/eDZPC8QZ

Did you know that less than 2% of total charitable giving goes to organizations dedicated to women and girls? While gender equality gains prominence, philanthropic support remains low. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Women’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University for #GiveToWomenAndGirls Day, working to close the funding gap. Help us change it with your support: https://lnkd.in/e8XQQ7Th

Nearly all causes of cervical cancer are caused by human papillomavirus or HPV. In mid-May, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved self-collection for cervical cancer screening in a health care setting. With this method, patients use a collection kit to take a vaginal sample that is tested for HPV. Dr. Harold Wiesenfeld, investigator at Magee-Womens Research Institute and physician at UPMC Magee, says the new method may increase the number of people able to be tested. "I had no symptoms. No pain. I didn’t even feel a lump," says Amy Stango, a breast cancer survivor treated at Magee-Womens. But it was her routine screening that detected the cancer early, saving her life. This #BreastCancer Awareness Month, Amy’s experience reminds us how critical early detection is. Make your health a priority – schedule your annual mammogram now, and encourage your loved ones to do the same. Early detection saves lives: https://bit.ly/3Y5GKoU.
