About us
The Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) is a leader in healthcare practice, education, innovation and research. It is also a branch campus of the UNC schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and public health. the home of UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC and UNC Asheville-UNC Gillings Master of Public Health (MPH) Program. Located in Asheville and founded in 1974, MAHEC serves a 16-county region in Western North Carolina. We are the largest Area Health Education Center in North Carolina, which evolved to address national and state concerns with the supply, retention and quality of health professionals. MAHEC provides patient care at several sites across the region, with Family Health, Ob/Gyn, and Dental Health offices as well as Community Pharmacies. We are the only high-risk obstetrics practice in the region and a safety net provider as an FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Center) Look-Alike. Our health professions education creates a pipeline of quality healthcare professionals from inspiring health careers in high school to providing clinical and professional training through undergraduate internships, allied health programs, medical school, residency programs, rural and specialty fellowships, and continuing medical and health education for thousands of participants annually. It’s been a tough week for sure but finally have the moment to let everyone know we were able to open the ABCCM free clinic on Monday and are serving anyone we can. Biggest need has been supplying medication to folks (anyone insured or not) since so many places were closed. A huge thank you to all of our ABCCM staff and volunteers who made it possible for us to get the pharmacy going! Mollie Scott, Chair and Dean of Pharmacy for UNC and MAHEC was one of the the first to jump in and help and is now our lead in developing a sustainable plan to keep pharmacy services open and help in creative ways.
