It's incredibly hard to convey what this photo means to Sargent and to me personally. These guys have worked tirelessly for the past 2+ seasons on the Maine Turnpike Authority Saco interchange project. Here they sit, at 530am, discussing the plan of the day before putting on their "cheerleader" hats and delivering it to the crew - which was considerable in numbers at times. Not to mention the phasing, coordination, and conflict challenges that arise when you have a 70mph highway running directly through the middle of your jobsite. And yet, through all of that, it was still a fun project to visit and a great project (and crew!) to help train and develop new hires. This, to me, highlights where we are and where we need to continue to head - challenging, meaningful work that provides us purpose, makes a difference, and still leaves room for "fun". A couple of these guys have been with us since they graduated high school, a couple more since college. Average age of these guys - very low thirties. Average tenure with the company - about 8 or 9 years. It's awe inspiring, truly, what these folks - and countless other employee-owners across our projects and company (roughly 507 others not pictured here) accomplish season after season and still manage to mentor others, keep morale high, and even have some fun. James McCarthy, P.E. Jeffrey Shock Jr. Shawn Powell (couldn't tag you?!) Alex Morgan Zach Pinkham - making it happen and keeping it FUN. 📸 Kendall Bickford

In 2019, a transportation study was conducted in collaboration with the MTA, MaineDOT, and the City of Saco. The study presented insights and recommendations aimed at addressing local transportation and congestion issues. Several reports were produced, analyzing various modifications to Exit 36 to improve traffic flow. As a result of this analysis, Exit 35 was proposed for both northbound and southbound traffic. The new interchange will feature four new ramps, two new toll plazas, a collector-distributor road, and modifications to Route 112. The work is being done by Sargent corporation and the completion date is late 2025. Below you can find progress photos. On Thursday, September 5th, Peter Mills stepped down as Executive Director of the Maine Turnpike Authority after 13 years of dedicated service. During his tenure, Peter was instrumental in modernizing the MTA and leading transformative projects. MTA Chairman Dan Wathen praised Mills' many accomplishments: "We are grateful for Peter’s tireless efforts to modernize the MTA, including increasing E-ZPass penetration from 59% to 88% and improving bond ratings, to leading major projects like the York Open Road Tolling Plaza and the Portland Area Widening. His efforts in legislative reform were equally significant, enabling us to strengthen toll enforcement, overhaul the commuter discount program, and negotiate agreements that benefitted both the Authority and the public." Join us in wishing Peter all the best in his next chapter! Swipe through some photos to look back on Peter’s incredible journey at MTA.

Soraya Syafarudin is a rising senior at the University of Maine. Last week, she completed her final week with us here at the Turnpike. We would like to share her takeaways and the projects she’s worked on this summer. "During my internship, I worked on a range of projects, including a successful campaign launched through the IBTTA, creating digital social media posts across multiple platforms, assisting with press releases, conducting background research on projects, and assisted in developing public outreach strategies." Soraya mentions that she gained insight on challenges within communication and public outreach. "I learned how important it is to understand your audience and how to create diverse communication strategies to convey information clearly and respectfully. From this, I got to understand how to integrate public feedback to revise strategies and improve outreach efforts." "I learned that communication and PR is fast-paced, and you must be flexible. The 109-mile road of the Turnpike travels through many different regions of Maine. This leads to differences in envisioned goals for the future of transportation in municipalities, communities, and at the individual level. It can be difficult to adjust your goals and visions with other varying goals and visons." "I did not know what to expect when thinking of communication and PR within transportation. Now, I have a better understanding for transportation and all the complexities that come with it. I learned things about transportation that I would not have otherwise, like, technology integration on tolling systems, project planning, infrastructure management, traffic data and analytics, congestion management and much more." Soraya found the range of diverse skillsets that go into project planning the most interesting. "Projects include various skillsets and teamwork like environmental planning, finance, IT, and PR. It was interesting to watch how those departments collaborate to achieve successful outcomes." What surprised Soraya the most was the emphasis on environmental considerations. "The Turnpike does many things in order to serve Maine’s environmental needs. This includes preserving land, wetlands, reducing carbon emissions being created from dense traffic congestion, minimizing construction waste and creating more opportunities for recreational activities like biking and running, and public transit opportunities." Here are some photos of what Soraya has worked on this summer. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication throughout this summer. Good luck on your upcoming school year Soraya!
