Last week, Care Team Members participated in the United Way of Southern Maine's annual CANstruction sculpture contest. MaineHealth honored the spirit of the Summer Games in Paris with an impressive Eiffel Tower sculpture built entirely from donated cans! Together with other local businesses, we helped collect enough food for over 20,000 meals to fight hunger in our community. We are proud to be part of an event that showcases creativity, teamwork, and generosity!

Children with significant behavioral health needs continue to find themselves stuck in hospital emergency departments because of a lack of secure residential treatment options for them in Maine. September is #DeafAwarenessMonth. This month is a time for honoring the achievements of Deaf individuals, raising awareness about Deaf culture, and educating the hearing community about ways of eliminating barriers to communication with those who are deaf or hard of hearing (HoH). MaineHealth Maine Medical Center has a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patient & Family Advisory Council (DHH-PFAC), that is one of just a few in the nation.

Mid Coast Hospital cafeteria recently made a significant shift towards supporting local agriculture by sourcing 14 percent of its food (by spend) from Native Maine’s Maine-based produce, replacing produce that had previously been shipped in from Sysco’s Boston distribution center. This transition isn't just about bringing fresher, seasonal produce like zucchini, broccoli, shredded carrots, onions, corn, and tomatoes to the table; it's also a key part of MaineHealth’s commitment to environmental sustainability. By choosing local produce, MaineHealth is making a meaningful impact on reducing its carbon footprint. On average, food in the U.S. travels about 1,500 miles from farm to plate, contributing significantly to transportation-related carbon emissions. In contrast, local produce from Native Maine typically travels less than 100 miles, cutting transportation emissions by up to 90 percent. Additionally, local sourcing reduces the need for extensive packaging and refrigeration, further minimizing environmental impact.
