Seventy-seven years ago on this day, Larry Kwong took to the ice with the New York Rangers, making him the first person of Asian descent to play in the National Hockey League (NHL). Today in New York, his achievement is being honored by an official proclamation. Happy Larry Kwong Day! Kwong wasn’t given the career he deserved in the NHL, but he did much to change attitudes about who could play hockey. He starred in leagues across North America for many years, winning MVP awards and championships. He also advanced hockey in Europe as a player-coach, popularizing the game and raising international play to higher levels. Kwong pushed through the many barriers placed in front of him to do what he loved and build up his beloved sport.
