In 2021, amidst the drastic uptick of Anti-Asian violence, a 13-year-old experienced an Anti-Asian attack at PS 20 Bowne Playground in Queens. This led to the first ever Hoops Over Hate 3v3 Basketball Tournament 🏀🏀🏀in Flushing where our community was able to come together on the court. This past Saturday, Apex for Youth hosted the tournament for the first time in Sunset Park, Brooklyn with the continued mission of bringing different youth together to stand against hate ❤️ We were pumped to have 75 youth on the court, along with our community partners, CAIPA, Garden of Hope, Healthfirst, Make Us Visible, and the NYC Commission Human Rights. 📸 : Liz Magee

Apex book fair this year 📚📚 saw an incredible turnout with 280 youth and 500 attendees showing up ready for summertime reading! We were able to distribute more than 4,000 books and 100 art kits to our community while our youth were able to listen to stories from AAPI authors ✍️, make some memories in our family photo booth 🤳, connect through a clay sculpting station and win a gift certificate to local AAPI restaurants 🥟🍱🍣🍜 We are so grateful for the turnout and especially to our incredible partners @Artsignite, @Brooklyn Book Bodega, @Chatham Sq. library and our corporate sponsors 🫶 Happy reading to our community and to all! 🤓📖 Photos by 📸: Clara Hung

Every day is a good day to talk about mental health for our Asian American youth. ❤️ At our gala, we talked to our supporters about why mental health and self-care are so important for our youth and our community. Swipe   to see what they had to say! As Constance Wu said, it’s important to have a safe space to talk about important topics like these, whether it be at organizations like Apex, or with friends and family. Remember to check in with your community, and don’t be afraid to lean on them for support! 😁

“My advice for somebody who is young and struggling right now is to stick to your people, the people who are closest to your heart” - Constance Wu Recently, we spoke to Constance about mental health, self-care, and her advice for our young community. 💚 Constance Wu was our gala honoree earlier this year, and we were honored to have her and BD Wong speak to our youth and Asian American youth everywhere! A reminder from Constance: be proud of what you do and how you do it, don’t sacrifice your integrity, and seek places where you can openly talk about your life and dreams! Remember to lend a caring ear to your loved ones and try writing them a handwritten letter sometime 💌

“The mental health needs of Asian American people are very specific, very very important, and often overlooked” - BD Wong A reminder to Asian American youth from BD: You’re not alone! Reach out to friends, families, mentors, and community for help and guidance; surround yourself with people who’ve gone through similar experiences – they can transform your outlook and worldview.

Our volunteers are truly the heartbeat of Apex for Youth and mentors are the driving force of change for our youth in our programs. Our mentors are the people helping our mentees get exposed to new opportunities to explore their interests and build their strengths and mindsets to help them overcome their everyday challenges. Through mentorship and our programs, our youth start to see themselves in new ways: as individuals with unique strengths and as valuable members of a community 💪❤️ Sid Gopinath shares his mentoring story and how impactful it’s been for him to see his mentee Justin grow over time 🫶 Join us now in becoming a crucial part of our community by becoming a volunteer.
