Health and dignity for all.
About us
Malteser International Americas is an affiliate of Malteser International, the global humanitarian relief organization of the Order of Malta, a lay religious order. We are a faith-based, Catholic, Non-Governmental Organization that provides emergency relief after disasters and supports recovery efforts, bridging the gap between humanitarian aid and sustainable development. For nearly 60 years, with over 100 projects annually in 25 countries worldwide, we have been standing by those affected by poverty, disease, conflict and disaster, helping them lead a healthy life with dignity. We focus on providing relief, vital health care, nutrition, clean water, hygiene, and sanitation, and disaster preparedness to vulnerable people in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Malteser International Americas operates major projects in four key countries: Colombia, Haiti, Mexico and Peru. We also provide disaster relief and recovery in the United States, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and in countries where our assistance is requested. With the help of community-based partners and local Order of Malta Associations, children and families live healthier lives with dignity. We work closely with the three U.S. Associations: American , Federal and Western.

Distributing warm meals to displaced people in #Lebanon “Many people had to flee quickly and have only been able to take the essentials with them. The Lebanese government is talking about the largest number of internally displaced persons in an extremely limited period of time in the country's history. The internally displaced communities currently lack everything – from accommodation to water, food, and hygiene supplies,” reports Lisa Kramer, our country coordinator for Lebanon. In the context of our existing projects with our partner organization Order Of Malta Lebanon, we are expanding our aid for the internally displaced persons in Lebanon: ➡️ distributing warm meals ➡️ expanding medical aid ➡️ procurement of much needed relief supplies LOVE. #Lebanon: Malteser International concerned about security and supply of health facilities According to the UN, the recent attacks in southern and eastern Lebanon, as well as in Beirut, are the deadliest in years. The local Ministry of Public Health reports that around 500 people have lost their lives, over 1,500 have been injured, and more than 100,000 have been internally displaced. Amid this turmoil, the staff at the health facilities of the Order Of Malta Lebanon, our partner organization, are working tirelessly under extreme conditions. A Community Healthcare Center in the south has already been relocated due to nearby bombings, and our two Mobile Medical Units in this area must constantly adjust their routes to avoid attacks. Lisa Kramer, our country coordinator for Lebanon, shares: “The work is becoming increasingly difficult for our partner organization and us, but right now the people in Lebanon need our support. We have seen in other wars that health facilities were not protected from attacks, and we now call for international law to be upheld and for the protection of health facilities to be ensured.” Since 2012, we’ve been working with the Lebanese Order of Malta to provide essential healthcare through 4 Mobile Medical Units and 11 Community Healthcare Centers across the country, while also improving the nutritional situation through the operation of Agro-Humanitarian Centers. 🔗 Read our latest press release for more details: https://lnkd.in/ezUtiU4G We remain committed to supporting those in need during these challenging times. Additional relief transport reached people in Gaza Last week, another humanitarian aid delivery arrived in northern Gaza, providing much-needed support to people in need in #Gaza. Thanks to the support of Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany and Aktion Deutschland Hilft e.V., a total of 40 tons of food kits were delivered for distribution at the new distribution center established by the Latin Patriarchate near the Patriarchate’s compound in northern Gaza. Next to non-perishable items like canned chickpeas and dates, the aid delivery includes fresh fruits and vegetables. For many of the people, this will be the first time in months they have access to fresh vegetables and fruit, vital for their health. This aid, distributed yesterday, will support 1,000 families for the next month, providing much-needed nutrition to those in need. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Order of Malta continue their efforts, with more aid and medical facilities planned in the coming months. What does mental health mean for your community? This is one of the questions that 14 women in #LaGuajira, #Colombia, have been able to answer after receiving training in mental health and psychosocial support. Thanks to this training, they are prepared to offer basic emotional support to individuals in vulnerable situations, such as personal crises, family conflicts, or experiences of violence. Each of these women has received a diploma certifying them as popular therapists, trained to: create safe spaces where individuals can express their emotions without being judged, and help people identify and confront difficult situations. As part of the community, popular therapists have a deep understanding of local needs and realities, allowing them to provide closer and culturally appropriate support. This achievement is made possible thanks to the support of The Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), the humanitarian bureau of the U.S. Department of State, and the training provided by our on-the-ground partner, #PDPC. These women are now role models in their communities. Order of Malta Malteser International

In this #WorldYouthDay, we celebrate the commitment of José and Luz Neila, young Wayuu leaders who are driving change in their communities. Through our #MAPSalud program, which aims to improve access to healthcare in #LaGuajira, they have trained as leaders and community managers. Now, along with 50 other young individuals, they are working towards a healthier future for their communities by identifying challenges and offering solutions. Thanks to the support of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and our on-the-ground partner Anashiwaya IPS-I, these young people are making a difference. Indigenous women receive prenatal care from both the ancestral wisdom of midwives, and from Western medicine. This combination of knowledge is possible thanks to our health access program in Indigenous communities, #MAPSalud, which guarantees free care in the native language wayuunaiki and in Spanish for a better understanding of the services. 👉🏻We are reaching 20 hard-to-access communities in #LaGuajira in northern #Colombia thanks to the support of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the support of our partner Anashiwaya IPS-I.
