The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). The Fellowship brings young leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training and creates unique opportunities for Fellows and Americans to collaborate as they spur economic growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa and the United States. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is a program of the U.S. Department of State with funding provided by the U.S. Government and administered by IREX.

As September comes to a close, we are excited to highlight the work 2021 Alumni Lydie Mukasekuru Mungala and Golden Maunganidze have done to promote peace and security. Through a LINC Grant collaboration, the two conducted a training for journalists in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to impart essential peace journalism skills and contribute to conflict resolution and peace-building. #YALI2024 Alumnus Dr. Umar Muhumuza from Uganda, along with his PDE Host Project C.U.R.E. hosted a networking reception in August for PDE Fellows in Washington, D.C! Fellows were honored to be joined by Ambassadors to the U.S. from Malawi, Lesotho, and Zambia to explore collaborations and address global healthcare challenges.
