This past weekend, our Order to Cash and Finance teams volunteered at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event in Buffalo. Braving the chilly Saturday morning, MPG team members showed up to support the cause in various ways. Karen Perri and her husband helped check in volunteers, while Dylan Irwin kept everyone hydrated at the water station. Leanne Khoury and Sarah Ismert had fun with Pinky the Unicorn, taking pictures and collecting donations. Meanwhile, Ashley Walker brought extra cheer by wearing the Pinky the Unicorn costume, spreading smiles throughout the event! Customer obsession is at the heart of everything that Amazon does. From Jeff Bezos directly, "We're not competitor obsessed, we're customer obsessed. We start with what the customer needs and we work backwards.” I attended #unboxed last week which is Amazon's annual meeting about new Ad updates. The "Customers" at this event are brands & agencies who buy Ads. So if your Customer is someone who buys ads and you are a customer obsessed organization, what would you do? Sell them more Ads. Here is another Jeff Bezos quote, "Advertising is the price you pay for an unremarkable product or service." Given the massive increases in 3P seller fees over the past few years, inflation across the supply chain, and rising competition from Temu, Shein, TikTok and others, it would have been nice to hear more about "doing more with less". Because there are all sorts of ways to drive more profitable sales without only utilizing Ads. Amazon (and myself included) like to talk about "thinking long term". But the harsh reality is there is no long term if you run out of money in the short term. If you are a part of an organization that is having to make tough decisions or just want to have an entertaining conversation (this part I promise!), please feel free to reach out and know you are not alone.
