On this Mental Health Awareness Day, we hope to bring awareness to the need for expanded mental health care. We asked a member of our Behavioral Health Unit for a few tips on how individuals can be kind to their mind. Fida Hassan, MD, MPH, our Medical Director of Psychiatric Services, stated that, “taking short breaks, even for a few minutes may be invaluable to reset the mind and refocus. Learning positive coping skills, deep breathing, meditation, taking space, and talking to a friend/loved one can be healing. Remember that self-care is how you take your power back.” If you or someone you know could benefit for additional support, we offer a Partial Hospital Program (PHP) that is a voluntary, short-term, structured outpatient mental health program that helps patients to develop independent living skills and healthy lifestyles. Great information about when to choose urgent care versus the emergency department by Dr. Teresa Pazdral, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Marlborough Hospital! #caringforthecommunity #communityhospital #emergencydepartment
Dr. Teresa Pazdral, Chief of Emergency Medicine at UMass Memorial Health - Marlborough Hospital, explains when to choose urgent care versus the emergency department. She says extremities versus the core is a good general way to understand which you should go to. Core issues like chest pain, severe headaches with rash or fever, and neurological symptoms (e.g., slurred speech, drooping face) need emergency department attention. Meanwhile, external issues like rashes or burns can be handled by urgent care.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎉 Recently, we celebrated our Little Free Library's very first birthday. Our library has provided more than 200 health and wellness educational books and cookbooks in multiple languages for the community over the last year. We are proud to promote literacy, including those with limited English proficiency. Thank you to Mayor Christian, from the City of Marlborough, Superintendent Mary Murphy from the MARLBOROUGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS, Charles Cavagnaro III, MD, our Interim President, Ellen Carlucci, our VP of Marketing, Development and Communications and Rebecca Osterfield, our Community Health Worker for attending our birthday celebration. Mayor Christian brought a handful of books to add to our library and shared that, “I have always been a big supporter of literacy and love to read myself. I credit that to starting at a young age and reading any chance I got! That is why I want to give that opportunity to as many children in our community through my Children’s Book Literacy Initiative.” Superintendent Murphy is a huge advocate for reading and shared that, “Literacy skills allow students to seek out information, explore subjects in-depth and gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. If nothing else, literacy builds self-esteem. The more able a person is to express themselves, the greater their confidence, their self-esteem, and their chance at living a happy, healthy life.” We encourage and welcome anyone to stop by our Little Free Library to either share or take a book. 📚 #caringforthecommunity #communityhospital #littlefreelibrary #literacy Little Free Library UMass Memorial Health - Marlborough Hospital

At 8:46am on September 11, 2001, America was changed forever. Today, we grieve for the families who lost their loved ones and honor every service member, veteran, caregiver, and first responder for their bravery and sacrifice. Our hospital caregivers will be observing a moment of silence to honor the victims of 9/11. United we stand and we will never forget.
On the anniversary of 9/11, UMass Memorial Health remembers those who lost their lives, and the friends and loved ones left behind. Each life lost was a family member, a coworker, a neighbor and a friend. Today, we remember and honor them. #NeverForget
