About us
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a bi-county agency empowered by the State of Maryland in 1927 to acquire, develop, maintain and administer a regional system of parks within Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, and to provide land use planning for the physical development of these counties. The agency gained responsibility for public recreation program in Prince George's County in 1970. Governing Body The governing body of M-NCPPC consists of 10 members, 5 appointed by Montgomery County and 5 by Prince George's County. The Commission coordinates & acts on matters of interest to both counties, and meets at least once a month. The members of the Commission from each county serve as separate Planning Boards to facilitate, review and administer the matters affecting their respective counties. Range of Duties M-NCPPC administers a park system of more than 52,000 acres. It is composed of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and park-school recreation areas. Its staff of career employees includes planners, park and recreation administrators, park police and administration staff. In addition, seasonal workers staff numerous park and recreation programs. Our Vision The M-NCPPC embodies the vision of forward-looking community leaders who saw the need to plan for orderly development and protection of the natural resources in the two suburban counties bordering the District of Columbia. The population of the area it serves has increased to approximately 2 million residents in a bi-county area of great economic, racial, ethnic and geographic diversity. M-NCPPC's facilities, programs and responsibilities have constantly evolved and expanded to keep pace with the needs of this vibrant community. Our Mission Manage physical growth and plan communities. Protect and steward natural, cultural and historic resources. Provide leisure and recreational experiences.

Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission reposted this
I am SO proud of our Montgomery Planning Department’s recognition by the state of Maryland for outstanding achievement in advancing the state’s aspirations for sound growth and development policies. Our “Thrive Montgomery 2050” recently received a Maryland Department of Planning Sustainable Growth Award for Thrive Montgomery 2050, the update to Montgomery County’s General Plan. Thrive Montgomery 2050 takes a data-driven and community-informed approach to frame the county’s growth over the next 30 years, and its recommendations detail how Montgomery County can be more equitable, economically healthy, and environmentally resilient amid major demographic and technological changes in that time.
