As part of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (#LCRR), water systems in Massachusetts are required to inventory service line materials by October 16, 2024. The service line is the pipe that runs from the water main in the street to your house, building or facility. Contact your local public water supplier directly to help them identify what your water service line is made of. MassDEP's Water-Smart Program recently hosted a seminar at Williams Junior High School (Chelsea Public Schools), joining City of Chelsea officials, nonprofits and childcare centers to raise awareness about lead exposure and encourage more childcare facilities in the city to participate in lead testing. Our Water-Smart Program offers eligible public and private schools and childcare facilities across Massachusetts free and easy drinking water lead testing, along with access to results, and solutions for elevated levels of lead, if found. After testing and consultation, participants will receive certification acknowledging that they have tested their drinking water and taken any needed actions.
