  • Congratulations to MassDOT Aeronautics’ Advanced Aviation Technologies Group, “which is at the forefront of drone-based rail monitoring in dense population centers,” according to this article in Inside Unmanned Systems https://lnkd.in/e6fJdVbs “The FAA has granted MassDOT a comprehensive waiver permitting drones to operate beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) of their remote operators. This authorization enables MassDOT to conduct extensive drone inspections across the Commonwealth’s entire state rail network, enhancing the efficiency and safety of rail infrastructure assessments.” The article quotes Dr. Scott Uebelhart, MassDOT Aeronautics Division’s Chief Scientist, on the division’s use of UAV/drone operations to collaborate with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority [MBTA]. “MassDOT’s UAV program enables regular monitoring of more than 400 miles of rail track, increasing data capture significantly, observes the article. “We’ve cut that [monitoring] timeline in half, and my ambition is to continue reducing it so we can start detecting changes in infrastructure on much shorter timeframes.” BVLOS drone operations also enhance railroad schedule reliability and on-time performance for a variety of scenarios, including rapid post-storm rail and infrastructure assessment.

#Spotlight Sydney Mis, EIT “Commuting into Boston for college, I witnessed the effects transportation has on commuters every day, whether it’s people driving, taking public transportation, or walking. I was aware that so much of this infrastructure was owned and maintained by MassDOT, which ultimately drew me to the organization. I knew that the work MassDOT does directly impacts the daily lives of everyone transporting around the state. I started working at MassDOT as Bridge Inspection Co-op in January 2021. After graduating college, I joined the team as a Civil Engineer I in District 5’s Highway Maintenance section in September 2022. In October 2023, I began the role of Civil Engineer II In the same sector. Then, in May of 2024, I accepted the position of Civil Engineer III (Traffic Design/Review Engineer) in the District’s Traffic Design & Safety sector. One particularly memorable moment with the organization was during my Co-op. We were inspecting the Sea Street Bridge in Marshfield. Most of the bridge inspections I worked on prior to this involved using a bucket truck to inspect the bridge. However, this bridge was over a body of water, so we had to use a special type of equipment that parked on the bridge and swung us out and under the bridge to inspect it. This opportunity was truly an impressive experience. The most rewarding part of working at MassDOT is the direct impact it has on all the civilians relying on transportation infrastructure every day. During my time in Highway Maintenance, we regularly dealt with paving, sidewalk, and flooding issues. Knowing the work we do can directly improve someone’s daily commute to work, walk with their dog, or help alleviate any damaging flooding to their property is really rewarding. Advice for prospective interns: If there’s something you’d like to learn more about or a particular aspect of the job that interests you, don’t hesitate to communicate this with your coworkers and supervisors. Also, don’t be afraid to branch out of your comfort zone. Even if it’s something you might not be as interested or have the most confidence in yet, the more you learn and experience, the better."
