Looking to learn DAX for Power BI? This is one of the most important things you'll want to get your head around... Filter & Row Context. If you don't fundamentally understand these two, separate, concepts you're doing yourself a disservice and will have a very hard time learning DAX and elevating your skill set to more advanced levels. So, what exactly are Filter and Row Context? Well, Filter Context is responsible for filtering your data model while Row Context iterates through a single table. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is, kind of... Based on these definitions, Filter Context filters the data model by traversing relationships, always traveling from the one-side toward the many-side of a relationship. Conversely, because Row Context iterates through the rows of a table, it doesn't automatically travel through relationships in your data model (this is what DAX functions like RELATED & RELATEDTABLE are used for! More on this in another post). Ultimately, Filter & Row Context tell DAX exactly how to evaluate measures and calculated columns in your data model.
