Learning Excel? There may be times when you want to “hide” the text in a cell. Don’t make the font white! Do this instead... There is a way you can actually hide the text using custom number formatting. Remember, custom formats can contain up to 4 conditions, separated by semicolons (A;B;C;D) A: Format for positive numbers B: Format for negative numbers C: Format for zeros D: Format for text But what if the format for all of these is left blank? --> ;;; You get “invisible” values! A custom number format of three consecutive semicolons keeps the underlying value in a cell but prevents it from displaying. PRO TIP: Use this with conditional formatting color scales to create heatmaps! #mavenquicktips #excel #data #analytics #businessintelligence #careers

You always work with clean, highly formatted data right? (ha!) Here are Aaron's top 5 steps to clean up messy data: 1. Reshape the file or table structure as needed 2. Diagnose the quality of data in each column 3. Replace missing, blank, and omitted values as necessary 4. Set/update column data types 5. Structure dates in a consistent and ingestible way What else would you add? #data #analytics #powerbi #businessintelligence

Learning Excel? Here's a quick tip that will make your life easier... Working with numbers in the millions can be visually overwhelming. Here’s how you turn 1,230,000 into 1.23 M… Excel has an entire syntax dedicated to custom number formatting. Even though there is a wide variety of predefined options, we are going to define our own using the custom syntax. 1. With the numbers you’d like to format selected, press CTRL+1 2. In the “Format Cells” dialog box, go to the “Custom” category 3. In the “Type:” text box, write the following: 0,,.00 "M" 4. Press OK! How does this work? --> The first 0 forces excel to include a digit before the decimals --> Each comma removes 3 “zeros” from the number --> The .00 forces excel to include two decimal numbers --> The space and the “M” add exactly that… a space and an “M” Here are some more examples of the result: 950,000 = 0.95 M 5,500,000 = 5.55 M The best part? Excel still reads them as the full number under the hood, so you can do any kind of calculation on them! #mavenquicktips #excel #formatting #data #analytics #businessintelligence
