The Army’s Command and Control Cross Functional Team will be coming out with a new requirement for modular command posts as part of the service’s Mission Command on the Move project. The requirement aligns with the service’s Command and Control Fix, or C2 Fix, plan — the Army’s strategy to make its current network operations more efficient so they can “fight tonight.” It also aligns with the service’s push to move from large command posts with bulky equipment — that can take hours to set up and look like juicy targets to enemy long-range fires — to smaller, more mobile posts that can better survive the modern battlefield. The Mission Command on the Move project has long been on the Army’s to-do list. As the US Army undertakes a massive modernization effort, its efforts face challenges in maintaining readiness for current needs while transitioning to future needs. The best and fastest way to begin delivering 21st Century Warfare capabilities into the hands of our military is to expand and improve upon our most advanced and emerging systems. We are making the F-35 an example of that thinking in action. As the world’s premier air combat solution, it provides unmatched situational awareness and survivability, but it must also act as critical node in Joint All Domain Operations (JADO), with an ability to serve as an edge compute node, source of data, and a hub for integration of multiple manned and unmanned sensors. This capability was demonstrated in July when a PAC-3 missile successfully intercepted a threat using F-35 as an elevated sensor. The U.S. Army Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System (IBCS) used the F-35 data with other contributing sensor data to initiate the launch of the PAC-3 to neutralize an incoming threat using combat-proven Hit-to-Kill technology. This network-centric approach also can be seen in the multi-mission Aegis Weapon System, which combines sensor data from a variety of inputs and creates fire control solutions for sea and land-based effectors. Future Generation Wireless Technology (FutureG) Collapse #FutureG is a suite of emerging wireless network technologies enabled by DoD and commercial industry cooperation to enable military operations and ensure a free and open internet. As Fifth Generation (5G) wireless technology is adopted and provides building blocks for capability, the DoD will also look to FutureG for leap-ahead technologies to lead in creating future standards. The Department will invest in FutureG technology development to lay the groundwork for continued United States leadership in information technology, which is vital for maintaining our economic and national security. 4. Advanced Materials Collapse #Advanced materials explore innovative new materials and novel manufacturing techniques that can dramatically improve many of the Department's capabilities.
