Congratulations to Luis., who recently received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses! Here is an excerpt from the nomination story: "I had spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital away from my family and pets. Feeling emotional, I was lucky to have Luis as my day nurse. He came into my room with a smile and I immediately felt his care and compassion. He checked on me a lot, and if he saw I was a little down, he would take extra time in my room making me laugh and doing his best to cheer me up. In every interaction we had, I could see and feel the passion and love he has for being a nurse. I truly felt like a friend and not just another patient. I am so grateful and blessed to have him as a nurse!" Mayo Clinic is among over 5,000 healthcare organizations worldwide committed to the DAISY Award program. The DAISY Award is presented each month to an extraordinary nurse. If you know someone looking for a career in nursing, explore available opportunities at Mayo Clinic:

About us
Mayo Clinic has expanded and changed in many ways, but our values remain true to the vision of our founders. Our primary value – The needs of the patient come first – guides our plans and decisions as we create the future of health care. Join us and you'll find a culture of teamwork, professionalism and mutual respect, and most importantly, a life-changing career. Mayo Clinic was founded in Rochester, Minnesota by brothers Dr. William James Mayo and Dr. Charles Horace Mayo. More than 100 years later, their vision continues to evolve around a single guiding value: "The needs of the patient come first." Today we are the largest integrated, not for-profit medical group practice in the world. We are recognized for high-quality patient care more than any other academic medical center in the nation. While overall mortality from digestive diseases has dropped nationwide, a closer look reveals a significant upward trend in deaths from these diseases among Native populations as well as white women. “Deep-rooted, systemic racism can affect the design of health policies for certain areas and populations, and that affects health," says Mayo Clinic Advanced Motility Fellow Wafa Aldhaleei, M.D., M.P.H., first author of the study, which was published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. “Throughout the world, poverty, food insecurity, lack of access to clean water, environmental exposures, vaccine hesitancy, lack of insurance and healthcare access, as well as personal risk factors such as excess body weight, alcohol and substance use disorders can influence the gut microbiome." Shraddha Kalgutkar was born in India with a rare liver disease. The hope was her liver would heal itself. She grew up seemingly healthy and eventually moved to the United States to fulfill her dream of becoming an occupational therapist. In November 2022, Shraddha was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered her body wasn’t getting enough oxygen. Additional tests revealed her congenital liver condition had worsened and led to a more serious condition called hepatopulmonary syndrome. Her condition was so severe that Shraddha was denied a liver transplant and given one year to live. Refusing to give up, Shraddha turned to Mayo Clinic. Bashar Aqel, M.D., director of the Transplant Center at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, and his multidisciplinary team of experts went to work on a strategy to save Shraddha. "I may have no idea what tomorrow will bring, but knowing Mayo Clinic has my back allows me to focus on other aspects of this journey with renewed energy," Samantha Duke says. When Samantha discovered she had breast cancer, she didn’t have to look far for support. Her mother Jane walked a similar path 16 years earlier. Inspired both by her mom and the strong network of healthcare physicians and professionals on her team, Samantha remained positive throughout her treatment and is committed to advancing research on breast cancer. While Samantha’s future is not certain — she receives follow-up testing every six months — her experience has shown her that her team is prepared to handle whatever comes her way. The Mayo Clinic Oculofacial Plastics Clinic (OFPC) in Rochester, Minnesota, streamlines evaluation and treatment for people with complex periorbital reconstructive needs. Doctors at Mayo Clinic are researching a new way to help high-risk patients recover from right-sided infective endocarditis, a serious infection that can damage heart valves. They used a special catheter to suction out the resistant pockets of infection from the heart without surgery. The research study was conducted across 19 sites in the U.S. and led by Abdallah El Sabbagh, M.D., an interventional cardiologist at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Dr. El Sabbagh presented late-breaking research findings from the CLEAR-IE study at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Symposium on Oct. 30. Learn more: https://mayocl.in/3NL250X
